Photos/videos help with storage

Sounds like you're looking for cloud storage. Your first 15 GB of storage are free with a Google Account. There are other cloud services as well. First you need to be comfortable with storing your data on some one else's site. Do they guarantee recovery, etc. The cloud storage method has the advantage of being accessible where ever you can access your account on multiple devices.

 

If you are an Android user, why not use Google Photos? It's free for unlimited storage if you allow the original photo to be resized. If you need to store at original high resolution photo, then the limit apply as @Mark57 commented. That being said, I keep multiple backup copies in several different cloud storage as well as hard drives and memory cards. 4Tb HD is less than $100 nowadays.

 

I agree with @Salamander_King above. Being an IT pro for 30+ years and being responsible for mission critical data for both the business and individual users, I am cautious about storing "my" stuff on a "free" site without knowing what service level they agree to provide. A service level tells you what they will and will not do in the event of data loss, etc. You need to determine what level of "pain" you would go through if some or all of the pics were lost. If they are very important, then like @Salamander_King said, you would want multiple copies and verified backups.

I have about 180 TB (yes terabytes) of pics & media that I cannot afford to lose. I keep those on a local NAS (network attached storage) with high RAID redundancy and they never see the Internet. I also have an offsite static copy. Note, most of my pics are in the RAW and JPG formats. The RAW pics run between 20-50 MB each.

Seagate now has 16TB 3.5" SATA drive and Samsung has a 30TB 2.5" SSD so there are lots of local storage options. The storage future looks great.

I also have a lot of other more casual pics that I have in original form on multiple Google Drive accounts (15 GB each) and others in compressed, resized versions on Google Photos.

PS, if you are an Amazon Prime member, you get unlimited full-resolution online photo storage, and 5 GB free video storage.

Obviously, Prime is not free.

 

Our IT nerds recommend 3 (or more) separate backups using at least 2 technologies for important data.

With photos, it's fairly easy.
Amazon prime, and the Googles offer free backups for photos - up to 15GB (about 7500 photos) for the Googles.
I'd also consider a thumb drive and an external SSD.

The thumb drive will fit into the little fire-safe or Safe Deposit box that you keep other important papers in.
