Rough/stiff ride after new struts/shocks

With my current tires, 35psi is sluggish and detrimental to economy. 2-3 mpg lost easily, that isn't just noise. 40 (and slightly higher) gets good handling and acceleration. Damn you Discount Tire!!

 

Your mechanic gave you good advice.

Buy struts and shocks from the dealer. The KYB Excel-G's are aftermarket parts which are tuned differently.

 

I could have been clearer. I experienced a harsh ride after going from 89H to 91H because I over inflated the tire.

If you're not changing the size of the tire, you're don't need to make an adjustment for PSI.

 

The KYB are "OEM" and they supposedly also make the originol Toyota part, but while the aftermarket part may meet the OEM specification based on my experience replacing all with KYB at 210,000, that the part is not the same as the Toyota part-- the ride, while not bad, is noticable rougher over the Toyota part. Should absorb speed bumps just fine.

Aren't the 422s a cross-over tire? While it's an eco tire it will ride rougher for crossover type vehicles over a passenger vehicle?

My method for absorbing speed bumps is to slow to a dead-crawl. I hate those damn things, especially when they're planted every 20 feet or less.

 

Yes. Absorb at or below the speed limit.....25 mph for humps and 10 or less for bumps.

A while back I had a 4 runner that had a great ride with Bilstein shocks/struts, but they were over 10 years old and I decided to change them out with KYB shocks/struts. What a big mistake, the ride became horrible, stiff and bumpy. It ultimately lead to me selling the 4runner cause I couldn't take the harsh ride anymore.

I would think this is the same with the Prius KYB shocks/struts. I recently changed my 05 Prius with original OEM Toyota shocks/struts and the ride is excellent. So I think the KYBs are very different than the OEM stuff that Toyota sells.

 

I will second that. KYB struts are horrible. Bought it for my prius and i can feel every bump on the road. Tire pressure is 37 all around and its been more than 30,000 miles and still hard as rock. Just Bought used ones from lkq so lets see how it goes when it gets delivered.

 

Prius suspension has always been stiff. I remember when I bought my first Prius a few years back, it had 19k miles and the suspension seemed stiff. It wasn't until 60k miles that the suspension started loosening up lol.
