Parents drive a pristine 2010 and occasionally do not notice the turn indicators has been left on after a maneuver. The fact -- as others have noted in a few past posts found -- that the signal click sound is among the quietest, certainly does not help. This is a very common problem for seniors, even when hearing aids are not called for.

There is a program developed by AAA and the AARP called "CarFit" that mentions modifying turn signal volume, but after an hour searching online, we're not seeing who would perform this modification. Would be great if the Forum could provide a clue and refer us.

There's limits to accommodating disabilities when it comes to an elderly person safely operating a motor vehicle... Maybe there's a way to make the click louder, but more important, let your parents know that if they don't want to lose their drivers license they're going to have to be on top of stuff like this. If they're too out of it to hear and see the blinker is still on long after making a turn or changing lanes, then they're fast approaching the reality of being too out of it to drive themselves safely anymore. Not seeing and hearing a blinker light right in front of you is not much different than not seeing or hearing an emergency service vehicle on an urgent call running a red light right in front of 'em. They gotta notice that stuff!

Thanks for the response. There are devices such as this - a replacement turn signal relay that adds a small transducer (speaker) to amplify the sound: http://www.turnalarm.com/

If anyone has replaced the relay here, please advise on its location and difficulty to swap out?

no, i was just looking at the website. i would contact them. it says motion sensor, so maybe it just picks up on the blinker stalk movement

there's a link to installation instructions

the motion sensor mounts to the turn signal lever. the unit with sound and light mounts on the dash

too bad it doesn't have a volume control

For later readers, note that on fourth-generation Prius and Prius Prime cars, the volume can be customized using a Toyota Techstream diagnostic system (or equivalent). The setting is Meter/Gauge System > Flasher Sound Volume Adjustment, and according to the Repair Manual (more info), there are three levels: “Large,” “Medium,” or “Small.” Medium is the default.
