Hello! I downloaded the Dr. Prius app and ran a life expectancy test to see how the battery is doing. It tested 80% the 1st time but started before it could finish. 2nd time it made it to about 100 seconds left and started again but showed 72.73% remaining...

I could attempt to do it again or a few more times but I feel as if the car starts before it fully completed the time it has on screen. This may or may not skew the results, maybe that’s how the app is designed. However my car is at 91k miles so I figured I’d test to see how it’s doing before it drops out of warranty... voltages are staying at .02-.01 apart, so very close nothing out of the area, blade voltage I think was staying between 3.4-3.8 range or so I believe

main question is at what point does the Toyota warranty replace the battery? What percentage left? Would this cause any concern to you all? I have the four touring with the lithium pack

If the battery fails completely, it is covered by warranty.

ah so they don’t cover it if it’s getting weak? I know most phone manufacturers replace batteries when capacity falls below 80%

There was some talk about this app a while ago - search PriusChat. (or GOOGLE, it's probably easier).

Make that ONLY if it fails completely......or fails bad enough that the car doesn't run right.

when the battery goes outside toyotas design parameters, the computers set a trouble code, and you see a dash warning light.
until then, there is no warranty.

take heart, i think you're in good shape.

Alright well that’s a plus. I did email the app creator (saw he’s on here too) and asked him if the test are being done right, wanna make sure it’s being accurate

Interesting, never heard of the app before. I would be interested to try on a new car to see how it reads out on one with fewer miles

I've got the app, so far have just done the easy, static test. I wouldn't put too much weight in what it says, the percent. Maybe do the test again in 6 months or a year, see how it varies.

As a energy storage device it's the nature of all batteries to weaken with age and usage. Therefore Toyota's warranty has to be based on a total failure standard, the battery works until it does not.
Unfortunately, that means if your battery and vehicle is working, no codes being thrown, you're pretty much out of warranty luck regardless of what a diagnostic app may say about the fading health of the battery.

In the past some owners have had some luck with pro-rated assistance from Toyota, if their HV battery failed shortly after passing warranty. However, I haven't heard a outcome like that in quite a while, but if your Hybrid Battery fails shortly past warranty? Might be worth investigating if you could get some assistance from Toyota. But expecting coverage before tangible failure of the battery is IMO not realistic.
