12 kWh automotive LiIon battery

    "Lithium Technology Corporation (LTC), a global provider of large, rechargeable lithium-ion power solutions, is developing two of the largest, highest capacity lithium-ion battery systems yet for plug-in hybrid automobiles."

    "In conjunction with an unnamed automaker, LTC is developing a 12 kWh Li-ion battery system that should support a plug-in hybrid application in a four-passenger vehicle with an all-electric range of 60 miles. LTC says that its Li-ion system will be comparably sized to existing battery packs of about half the capacity."

    Any guesses.... who might the un-named auto-maker be? It won't be Toyota who are relying on Fuji Heavy and Panasonic EV.

    12 kWh equates to about 50 miles EV range, so it would be one heck of a PHEV.... Ford? GM? :unsure:

    I would love to see a 4 passenger, 60 miles EV plug-in hybrid car!

    Toyota tied up with Panasonic EV Energy for Li-ion development.
    Subaru (Fuji Heavy Industries) tied up with NEC Lamilion Energy for Li-ion development.

    Seeing how LTC is a US company (located in Eastern Pennsylvania), I would guess that it would be a US automaker.

    GM will be introducing several Hybrid sedans and car-based SUV's in 2007 as 2008 models. I think they will range from "mild hybrids" to full hybrids similar to the Camry and Prius. I'll try to get more details.

    I would guess GM. At the January detroit auto show they are supposed to be showing a plug-in hybrid. From what I read it is supposed to have 30 mile electric range. I will have to see if I can find the message.

    Note that an SUV (say, Ford Escape) takes 12 kWh to get the EV range that a Prius get on just 4.5 kWh. So, just because the pack is larger, doesn't mean you're gettin a "one heck of a PHEV". (Just one heck of an expensive PHEV.)
