hey guys. I have a 2019 prime premium. Yesterday on the freeway a rock hit my windshield and created a stellate pattern, less than dime size. I went through my insurance and they arranged a mobile safelite tech. He came out today but said windshield needs to be replaced as the crack started to expand.

is it better to go through safelite or dealer? I just worry if OEM parts will be installed and if they can do the proper calibration for the lane departure sensors. Is there anything else to be concerned with?

Thanks guys. I just got this car aug 2019 so this definitely hurts

Make sure they replace it with a factory Toyota one and if they say they aren’t doing it make sure you mention they will have to take the potential extra liability of an uncalibrated sensor

I had a windshield in my other Toyota replaced by Safelite, and they put in a Fuyao. It got a chip and cracked within about a month. It could be a coincidence, but I don't think so. I had the previous windshield for a few years, and judging by the the sandblasted surface the previous owner had it for a long time. That one was a Pilkington.

I will NEVER use Safelite again. I took my Gen III there and to make a long story short, it took me 2 months to get it back into working condition (they broke the LKA camera). See my thread on it.

Advanced Tech Package LKA calibration | PriusChat

    Lessons learned:

    1) Safelite is horrible

    2) Take car to dealer to get windshield replaced.

    3) Never switch shops mid-repair (I should have known better, but I was in a rush... ironic how that worked out)

the insurance keeps trying to steer me to safelite. They are saying they can promise OEM windshield but then the question is can they calibrate the lda camera like the above post mentioned. Per the toyota dealer the windshield should be OEM for lda to work properly and that only toyota would be able to calibrate the system. I submitted the quotation from toyota to my insurance. Hopefully there is coverage

Last year I had the same experience. Take it to the dealer, insist on OEM Toyota windshield, and have them calibrate the camera. The Toyota windshield is an acoustic and the non OEM are not, that's the trick to getting insurance to pay. The dealer has the test equipment to calibrate correctly, and most others do not. It's a very specialized procedure and if not done correctly all your safety features will not work. I have a reply on Prius Chat from last year, but did not look for it. Check out windshield replacement.

I replaced mine two years ago. There was national shortage of replacement windshield parts, and there was no aftermarket windshield available for PRIME (and maybe for Gen4) yet. I had to wait 2-3 weeks to have OEM windshield shipped from Japan, but it was replaced and calibrated without hitch. I had no deductible insurance, and did not have to pay for any cost. However, the Toyota dealer often do not perform the glass repair/replace work themselves. They subcontract this to a auto glass shop. The glass shop who replaced the windshield submitted the claim directly to my insurance, so there was no out of pocket cost there. The calibration part had to be performed by the dealer, but often dealers do not submit insurance claim for you. I had to pay the calibration cost of ~$150 out of my pocket which hat to be reimbursed from my insurance company later. All things considered, it was seamless repair costing nothing for me other than bit longer than usual waiting period.

Hope yours get replaced quickly hassle free.

I would not recommend Safelite based on information from a relative who worked there. Management pushes technicians to rush jobs while providing them with substandard tools and processes while also demanding perfect 10 out of 10 customer satisfaction survey scores that directly impact employee paychecks. The centralized department that handles scheduling and glass ordering is so far removed from the actual work being done that mistakes and overbooking often occur and there is no accountability.

I pay $25/year extra on my car insurance for OEM parts, but I haven't asked if that includes glass. I need to check that.

Yes, this is true, they dont do the glass replacement themselves... but they are on the hook if anything goes wrong.
