Agree, also OP says FE is not important. Wonder why he choose this vehicle in the 1st place.

Another thought popped up overnight: Some third party vendors sell push button shifters for Prius, as plug-in replacements for the OEM joystick unit. So the signaling protocol on those Hall-effect sensor lines has already been figured out and put to other use.

One of these push button shifters would be an easier starting point for building something meeting OP's wants. Or perhaps contact one of those vendors to see if they already have something? Especially in Japan, as their domestic market seems to offer a lot more third party Prius mods and accessories than does our North American market.

I did not say FE is not important. I said it's not the concern that is driving this query, as I have not seen a decline in FE after using B mode regularly.

Wow, 85 posts and 5 pages, when Bisco pretty much had the answer to the original query in post #3.

    I like this suggestion.

The only other thing I'd been able to think of was some combination of a microcontroller with an appropriate interface to trigger a simple beeper. Something like an arduino with a canshield + something that beeps.

However, I don't know what it should be listening for on the CANbus. The shift lever output is noted in the big excel file of all Prius CAN codes, but I'm not enough of a CAN hacker to directly exploit this.

It does look as though you can monitor CAN ID #540 and set it to beep when it gets 00 in the second byte.

    Hope this helps!

The only one who got it right was Electroingenieur, at #65 and #71. All the rest was guesswork. You can't get it "right" unless you have checked the facts.

The rest was irrelevant lecturing too about how to use B mode, which was unnecessary.

And thanks to the rest for the suggestions. I don't interfere with the system, I was just looking to see if there might be the option in the software.

What I don't understand is why people who think the question was answered are still following this thread! Y'all, get some red wine!
