Corolla to Prius gas tank swap

    Good point! I left all the O2 sensors connected the only part of the exhaust that was disconnected was the muffler and hangers

    So since the car has been back together I’ve probably put a few tankfuls in and I’m only getting 150 miles till it’s on empty. Recalibrated the gas gauge probably 5 times since the tank has been back in. Still only getting 150 miles till empty but I drove another 150 miles past that and it took 6 gallons. So pretty much when the gauge says empty I still have over half a tank. Im pretty sure it’s the meter inside the tank that’s bad. When I had the tank dropped and all the emissions off of it I could see inside the tank through the former hole for the charcoal canister and the bladder wasn’t collapsed. I’m debating on just getting a new tank.

    Ever run Lucas or Marvel oil through the tank several times? My tank gauge is not that far off but it helped with the gauge. Least i get 375-400. It was down to 325 before I started using it. Took like 5 tanks. I just use either with every fill up, seems to give me better milage anyhow.

    Good point Dave. It might be the contact points on the fuel meter in the tank. I’ll try and get some marvel mystery tomorrow. I’ve used it before on other vehicles and I’ve definitely noticed a difference. I’ve used it to cleaning chrome too.

    I tried it for a few tanks and no change. Found out that the temperature has to be between 70-90 degrees and the tank between 1/4 and 3/4 full when calibrating the gas gauge. Gonna be a few months till the temps get to that around here. The gauge has been hitting empty at around 150-200 miles and I’ve been filling up at 300. I’ll just have to live with it for now.

    I wish that was an option. Don’t have one and I moved here 2 months ago so I don’t know anyone with a climate controlled garage.

    Thanks, that looks like the European tank. I think the sensors and modules I from the corolla even though they had the same connectors I think they were calibrated differently than the Prius. After I swapped everything and started the car it seems like it went into a limp mode. I think the problem with getting the swap to work is the computer isn’t reading the sensors or module.

    The project has been scrapped for now. If I do try it again I’ll do it on a 3rd gen Prius if I buy one in the future just for a longer range fuel tank.

    Seems like this could be a reasonable option? Feed it into the filler neck like they do on diesel trucks, or possibly Y into the factory fuel line with a one way check valve on each line going to either tank?

    Anyone have the specs on the spare tire Chamber?

    I'm pretty sure that 99+% of car drivers wouldn't want a jerry rigged gasoline tank inside the passenger compartment. (I'm having flashbacks of Ford Pintos).

    Probably not. But you can find professionals to custom cut and make it safe for at least yourself to enjoy and share with others.

    I was thinking that the most effective place to have a street legal Prius-sized auxiliary gas tank would be in the turbulent area right in front of the back license plate. A half gallon milk carton is around 3.8". Picture something that size but 6 of them lined up in front of the license plate. Then we would have to make it safe, look decent and aerodynamic with some outer frame.

    For me, figuring out how to 1 ) take apart the back truck door 2) where to confidently secure the aux tank, and 3) how to transfer the important stuff like the license plate from the door to back of aux tank is the hard part.

    As stated by another, what happens to this fuel tank in the event of a "fender bender" rear end collision?

    How would you "make it safe" if it's part of the rear impact crumple zone?
