William Ruckelshaus, the first chief of the EPA, dead today in Medina, local to me.

    William Ruckelshaus - Wikipedia

When Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency by executive order, he tapped Ruckleshaus as its first chief. Ruckelshaus immediately got to work on air pollution, the burning Cuyahoga River, and soon banned DDT. After a decade's hiatus for other politics and then private industry, he returned to run this agency again about mid-term of Reagan's administration.

He is best known for a certain other political event, but see the political dungeon for that.

There once was a time when 'conservative' included air and water.

December 5 is 'World Soil Day'. There are a lot of World Whatever days and this one won't rock the house. But there is some there here, and Ruck's soul might not be displeased if we paid it some mind.
