Is there any way to get the display to show amperage?

Since it is everyone's goal to get as much kinetic energy converted and stored in the battery when decelerating as possible, it seems like we really need to know how many amps are flowing in when we brake. That way, we can modulate braking pressure so that we never exceed the claimed 100 amp charging limit and waste the surplus as brake heat.

Yet the fancy display shows only that the green arrow is charging, but not HOW MUCH it is charging.

Is there a software update that can do this?

(And why didn't Toyota provide it in the first place?)

    Thanks

... or you could keep your eyes on the road so you don't "modulate" yourself into a busy intersection of opposing traffic. I'm guessing that may have something to do with Toyota's decision, if they even considered the idea.

The CAN-VIEW might, but it's not ready yet for the 2006.

Actually, CAN-View does display this. Yep, not yet for 2006

Get a ScanGuage. It plugs in to the OBD2 plug.

It displays battery current? I wasn't aware that was an OBDII function.

It is. Go to http://www.scangauge.com/ It is explained there.

I have my ScanGuage set up to read out RPM, MPH, Coolant Temperature, and AMP. One can set it up for other readouts. Incidentally the MPH readout is accurate whereas the the-in dash readout is not.

Whats the AMP reading from?.. the 12V battery for accessories or the 201 volt battery?

I am curios when I drive by one of those radar stand that show you your speed. My dash speedo and the stand show the same number. Do the police radars show you going faster than you really are? Would this not be illegal? I am wondering that’s all.

Humm..... I think you may have mistook the "scanguage" as a radar device?
What you are asking is of a different subject.. the scanguage is a device that taps into your computers info and gives you various readouts... even error codes etc.. a handy little device for not much money if your a techy kinda guy that likes to know that info.

But in answer to your question, the police radars are "supposed" to be calibrated on a scheduled basis.
Normally, the "stand" readouts should be pretty accurate and thats why it shows the same as your speedo.

Yes, it would be illegal if they tampered with it to show faster than your really going.

But the scanguage can be found here if your curious.

ScanGage reads the 12V system not the HSD system. For that talk to Hobbit for an Analog solution or wait for the 06 or > CAN View. The MFD is a fair approximation. As far as I can tell it does not read any discharge under about 10 Amps. It records any charging of the system. The real difference is the small amount of discharge during the "guide"

Do you have stock wheels and tires? My speedometer registers one mile per hour slower while the ScanGuage registers right on. I read that Toyota does this on purpose. It is not a big deal. Some people choose a slightly larger tire size when it is time for replacement to compensate for this.

Would you please post a pic of how this looks / is hooked up in your Prius?

    Thanks!

Sure. It is held on by sticky backed Velcro. Next to it on the left is my EV switch which is entirely separate from the wiring of the car.

Attila's Sharp Zaurus and my SuperMID C-1 are able to display HV battery current on 2006 Prius too.

I don't see anything about it saying it reads amps in the manual or site.

That Scangauge is showing the 12V battery voltage. Nothing at all about amperage. :)

I strongly prefer CAN View, but I have an 04 model with the analog MFD, which allows this:

Or you can put it up graphically, like this:

Both displays can be customized to show desired parameters, including as you can see, amps.

Note: these are in-the-dark screenshots taken to emphasize what CAN View really looks like on the MFD (and de-emphasize the fact that I really need to dust my car -- flash shots were awful...).

With an 06 or later car that has the digital MFD, you'd have to mount a second screen and get the V4 model, vice the V3 which puts data right on the MFD.
