I have a 2007 that I recently purchased. Putting gas in is ridiculous as if I do not go super slow, apparently it is not venting and gas shoots back out. I have tried holding the nozzle at various positions and also various flow rates.

The only way I can fill tank is to basically hold the nozzle almost all the way out (so I can see the flow) and go as slow as possible. Even then it sometimes backs up. It takes be almost over 20 minutes for about 3/4 of a tank.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Happens once in a while for me. Best way, for whatever reason, is to rotate the nozel 180 degrees so you are pumping upside down. For some reason works for me.

You can also google "2007 prius fuel calibration" and basically if you hold down the ODO and tap start twice, then let go of ODO and press it 3 more times (holding ODO down on 3rd time)....you'll get numbers to change on the speedometer....you keep holding for about 10 seconds until you see the middle digit change to 1...then you let go and hold ODO again until it resets by itself.

These steps are off of recent memory so might be slightly off but the YouTube videos will walk you through it (takes like 30 seconds). You'll need to be on a flat surface and be on trip A..

I think fuel calibration has more to do with the reading of the fuel level but might have something to do with your situation, not sure.

What impresses me the most about that video is the outside temperature reading on the MFD. Wow. That man has nads of steel to be out making a youtube video at 14F. There is no way in he** I'd even be thinking about that.

I was reminded again while fueling this morning of the following.

Sometimes, the gas bubbles up like it is trying to vent. There are also times when I think I have a decent flow going in but when I stop and remove nozzle, gas just comes shooting back out. Does this add a different perspective?

It's strange, because the very first time I refueled my 2007 (bought it around Feb 2018? with ~143k miles) it did the same thing. I thought it had filled normally, just like every other car. I filled it until the lever clicked off. No topping or anything. Nothing different that stood out. Pulled the nozzle out and yikes, gas came surging out of the tank. Startled the heck out of me. I continue to use the same gas station and same pump to this day, but have never had it happen again. Wish I had a good answer for you about what causes it.

My Prius does that at Altitude in Colorado after changing elevation a lot. Before I fill up I
Use the tip of the fuel pump to open the round inner door and let it sit for 30 seconds before adding fuel also I don’t force gas in and don’t top off after the auto shut off works.
    So far so good.

On cold weather it does that to my car. But not 20 minutes. Maybe this is something else from what I'm about to tell you.
From empty I get fill up or close to filled up 3-4 mins the most popping once or twice very slow pumping. I found out it helps to crack open the gas cap when in-line for gassing to get the air bubbles out.., I cant remember well what Patrick told me. Some diaphragm inside the tank allowing it to shrink a bit. Since the law here in the Northwest you cant pump your own gas, by doing this procedure, whatever I get, that's what I get. Sometimes full or sometimes short 2 bar.
....On summer warmer weather, at least I can fill up more fuel and 98% full tank.
