I paid ~$19 shipped for my mVCI. It's performance certainly supports the likelihood that it's pretty beta...

I was able to install both with zero computer savvy by simply following included instructions. I've done re-installs of mVCI due to jamming it up by forgetting to turn off Bitdefender when initializing Techstream. My $63 shipped, XP running Dell Latitude circa 2006, is all over whatever iteration of Trojan that was included free of charge:rolleyes:... From the darkest corners of PriusChat, post #11 from the super-sketchy @dolj :

Using MVCI: cannot connect to VIM error..... | PriusChat

makes for a seamless installation with regard to my particular version. VXDIAG installed in about 5 minutes with included instructions, and has performed flawlessly since, no dark corners involved.

Thanks for the input, Brad. I was hoping you, or someone else capable of summarizing these cables in a computer-literate manner would do just that(y):).

Interesting. So the Mini VCI cables actually include a dark copy of TS (implied from step 4).

It's getting clearer now. As a programmer/IT person I know how picky things can be with firmware and drivers so there should be different firmware for VXDIAG as well. Looking at the wide variety of units available, some say they will run TechStream v10 or 11 or 12 so I assume that is because the firmware on some VXDIAG units is newer than others. I also assume one that says it will work with 12 will also run v10 (it had been suggested to stay away from 11 and 12), but perhaps they are not backward compatible. In one prior post you linked to ecucom on Ebay as a recommended unit, which says it is for v10. Apparently v10 will work with cars up to 2015 MY so not the Gen 4 Prii, which isn't a concern for me currently at least.

I don't believe it matters as long as your Prius year/model is supported (i.e., might not be able to use really old TS with newer years).

After nearly 2 years (!?!?!), last night I finally connected to our Prius, which is not even the same one we had when I bought the VXDIAG, and verified the software worked OK. I was surprised that it showed several DTCs until I saw they were all historical. I didn't realize "clearing" the engine light apparently just archives those.

What ended up happening to your other Prius, with the check hybrid system issues? Did you ever get around to fixing that?

There was never a problem with our first Prius. I just wanted the TS software to play and check things out but never got around to doing it. It was totaled on my way back home from the 2017 eclipse.

I have now used it on our 2012 Prius, a 2014 v and 2015 c. I believe the version I have (12) works with any Toyota up to 2017.

Right on. I just finished installing a cracked amazon copy of TechStream version 12 and hooked it up to my Prius to check my battery voltage.
