Need dash cam due to break-in

lol Years ago I had a 200SX as a daily driver that I had to do that with. I used it in one stereo competition (I was a 12v installer back then) and after 3 breaks ins where they got less and less, I got tired of fixing windows and started leaving it unlocked. Then you just have to worry about a dead battery when you come out and the lights and such have been on all night. Unless you get a real degenerate. I once picked up a CRX really cheap because it needed urine cleaned out of the inside of it. Leaving it unlocked didn't work for them either.

 

Dash Cams and even the reality that 90%+ of most of the people walking around are doing so with smart phones with camera's, have all happened within the scope of my lifetime.

To be honest? I'm stuck in the La Brea tar pit of my own age.
I can't argue against dash cams. They can be helpful in documenting an accident. I think generally just making people more attentive. But it seems so strange to be living in an age where once you step out your front door, it's likely any venue you go to or approach, your going to be surrounded by uncountable recording devices. This now includes just driving down the street.

Latent paranoia has me constantly thinking about the reality that at every given moment, every given location, it's more and more likely I'm being recorded by somebody, somewhere.

Flip someone the bird while driving? You can end up on youtube.
A "bad day moment" can make you an unwitting viral star.

I don't know.
Is it better that we now have a general population recording nearly all of existence as it unfolds?

I just can't bring myself to owning a dash cam. Because for some reason, I kind of value the non-recordable freedom of NOT having one.
But I realize this is an extreme minority position and an argument I can't win.

 

I understand where you are coming from, and I think a lot of this depends on where you live and what you are doing. I originally bought mine when I lived in San Jose. I was daily driving my 4Runner which has an ARB bull bar front bumper on it. After having several cyclists run stop signs in front of us I didn't want to end up on the news fighting a loosing battle trying to explain how the car wasn't at fault in an accident. So I bought my first camera. When we moved 100 miles away from work and added the C to the fleet, the camera got moved to it. It paid off very quickly when my still very new car had $1200 worth of damage done to it by debris flying out of a landscape truck. Now if this was 1955 maybe these guys would have apologized and offered to pay for the damage, but in this day and age very few people take responsibility for their actions, and you have to prove everything. The camera did just that.

As the front vehicle in a recent rear end accident the camera has again proven to be valuable when the 3rd person in line that started the collision tried saying the middle person caused the situation. We have also captured other peoples accidents and helped them out as well.

I generally do not publicly post people's "bad day's" or road rage incidents. Partially because I just don't have time to sort and edit all of the stuff we capture! I do wish there wasn't a need for it, but with police already asking about having access to all of the data being recorded by the autonomous driving cars being tested privacy on a standard public roadway is a thing of the past. This is probably why I want to make my way out of this state sooner than later.

 

I have not found the perfect system yet, at least not a reasonably priced one. I just use a mix of a OBD tracker ($100; Automatic) and a Garmin camera ($100; Cam 45 or 55?). The Garmin has lane assist and it will turn itself on to record (takes photos too) if it senses an incoming accident. I think the models I have are older so there is probably something better out there. I would keep an eye out for features with automatic cloud upload otherwise anyone could take the sd card out. I have a hotspot ($25 mo) so something that uploads automatically would be best. Also a camera system with more than one camera or hooks into the backup camera to record?

 

Some people are just drunk going around being dicks. Its not even about taking anything, just shooting out a window with a BB gun because they just got the stupid thing. The car alarm would be a good buy. I'm looking to get one once my car gets here.

 

Exactly. That is a huge problem people are not paying attention to, with the police intruding. They are taught wrong. There are so many people that had their phones, data taken, and people forced into giving passcodes or they just straight hacked into it. People do not realize how illegal that is...if you write or have any intellectual ability or even family you must protect your privacy, your property, etc. The people who write code will understand that eventually as well.

 

I have the Blackvue 750ds dual channel cam. This is a very good dash cam. I also installed the Cellink Neo battery that powers the parking mode without draining your 12 volt battery. Black box my car is an excellent vendor. I also Have the Thinkware F800pro in my other car. The Blackvue does a better job with cloud recording. If you have access to a hotspot, either a mobile hotspot or your home Wifi (if strong enough signal), you can set up the Blackvue to send you a notification and video if your car detects motion or if the g force sensors are triggered. Motion detection is way too sensitive in my opinion. The cloud video is sort of like with the ring doorbell, where if someone steals the device you might be lucky enough to see their face (on your cloud video) before they got the camera. These cams use a super capacitor instead of a lithium battery so they have a higher heat tolerance also.

 

Wouldn't it be cool to have Killer the angry German Sheppard chillin overnight in your car with the windows cracked? Or better yet, have Killer trained to hang out nearby in the shadows ready to pounce............. I hear they go for the crotch and shake it like a polaroid picture!! I know, we can only imagine!

 

I don't want hair in my car and the trained killed might come back to bite me in the butt. lol. Til then just have to find a good security / camera system

nvm the subscription plan kills it for me. I already pay for unlimited data I don't need another bill. Back to the Garmin....
