Might be worth getting the bs in writing from as many dealerships are possible and then reporting them (with evidence) to the state. If I were part of the state agency overseeing the program, I would want to know that dealerships are misrepresenting its terms to eligible car buyers.

That's right. I didn't get the best price, but I encountered the least amount of bull-shittery with them. And since RYR only give you a matter of weeks to get your car, I had to go with it. Sad, I know.

You get a car with a huge chunk of it paid for on your neighbors dime. (Tax dollars) & then complain about the dealership that sells it.

    Astonishing.

Money was received from the state for the consumer to enable the purchase of a clean car. The dealership wants that money instead.

You're saying that because I received something somewhere that bars me from complaining about any other thing in the world, ever.

Umm sorry but what kind of logic is this.

First, please show me where I stated you couldn't complain about anything else in the world. Ever?

It's all pretty straight forward to me. Your neighbors got taxed by the state to provide the cash for you to purchase the car. Your whining like a Twitterflake about the whole process. So yeah, quit complaining about it. Why not complain about being taxed to buy your neighbor a vehicle? I would think anyone would prefer to be taxed a little less. Especially in the DPRC

@dubit hey cool off already. Millions of Californians will never have to breathe the poisonous emissions of the old Honda. That’s what the state is buying for its people, with the taxes collected from same.

Beyond that, it just looks like California isn’t getting a very good deal in this case.

@dubit - this. You clearly are unaware that what you described is what happens to all taxed funds. lol

FYI I wasn't complaining about the program in my comment, I was complaining about the dealership wanting to cash in on the program when it's not for them. The way the program is administrated allows them to do this.

With programs like this I think the government, or the people running the program have a responsibility to make sure they are treating their customers right. If not pull them from the program, if they find other illegal practices fine them.

I think that the car dealerships are getting incentives just for being on the list, as a participant, which is wrong. I caught 2 places with some shady practices: Improperly posted years on the cars, selling an 2016 as a 2018 prius, upped the priced $2,000 from the posted priced just for holding a RYR voucher (he complained about having to hold the car for a month; the car is still on the lot a month later), then there was the old dangle the carrot on the stick (claims they have the car over the phone and online and when you show up they try selling you something else; car not on the lot), also one place said they are not part of RYR but is on the list.

I have a 2005 Prius.. It will be eligible in May next year. I the agency about it and they said hybrids might not be eligible.. (it's complicated) and it might need to fail a smog test. Did you have any experience like that? Thanks.

Yeah I was worrying about this, too. But I just did the smog test, and sent in the report. I don't think the smog test was failed, actually. But I know that one of the engine test flags was on (some failure of the catalytic converter). Maybe that helped it. Maybe they don't even look at the numbers. I'm pretty sure it passed the smog test, though.

I just signed up the program. Based on the information from this post, I guess I have to wait a little longer than I would expect. I am also interested to get a Prime. had a 2008 Prius for 10 years/ 200,000 miles, was very happy with the car.

seems the $1500 Toyota discount will be cut off early Jan, so I may just miss that promotion.

I retired a 1995 Lexus ES 300 with 147,000 miles. Still was running great but with terrible gas economy.

It takes about 3 months. 6 of those weeks are once you find the car and sign the contract.

just got some more information regards the program: the amount of money that this program provides also varies based on zip code. some zip codes may not get anything at all.

and the official website didn't have this information formally mentioned. I guess the reason for this might be either this is a newly added condition that the website didn't update yet, or they didn't want to post official information on the website to prevent people take advantage on purpose.

From what I remember, this was always the case. The rebate amounts are increased for "disadvantaged area codes". There is also a map out there. I don't have time to look it up now, but I remember looking at a map published on line with clearly demarcated boundaries for the disadvantaged areas and such.

yes, after a closer look at the website, there is a quick checkup for zip code/income to give estimate how much money to get for the program. I guess I didn't check close enough when sign up.
