    :D

O.K., I feel a bit like a 5-year-old, but had a fairly serious injury accident just over a year ago and have dreaded having something such as a flat on the road.

Well, today, in 35-degree F ( 2-degree C), with bucketing rain, I had a flat on the Prius. Passenger-side rear.

Never would have been a favorite job before my accident. But, with "supposedly healed" severe breaks in the right arm as well as a destroyed hip socket, I was really not looking forward to this. Couple it with it happened on a road with a decided tilt from center (how do you say that?) and I have to admit I was more than a bit intimidated.

But, got out and did the job. Of course, about five minutes after I was done, the rain stopped.

Drove to the tire shop on the spare. Told them to go ahead and replace both rear tires as they are both nearly to the point of showing Mr. Lincoln's head. The front two are still very good as they were replaced in September.

Anyway, proud of myself (got to take it where I can get it).
Kristi (yes, I usually go by Kris, short for Kristen, but today....).

Changing out a flat tire on the side of the road is hard enough for someone in good physical condition. Nice work!

Good job, and good for you for keeping an eye on your spare tire pressure. I've known so many people who get a flat, only to find their spare doesn't hardly have any air in it all. Leaving them stuck! :)

Thanks all for the nice thoughts.

Reading it back sounds sort of dramatic, duh...but ... then again. And I did overstate the rain. Probably more moderately heavy, not to the bucket stage.

I've never understood why 'drivers education' did not include:
    • checking oil level
    • checking tire pressure
    • checking engine belt
    • changing tire
Or do I have it confused with auto mechanics class?

Well done Ms. Kristi . . . you can drive one of my cars any day.

Changing a tire is not trivial, deserving of a thread. Doubly so when you've been "in the war". (y)

Last time I did it we were in the Costco parking lot, with the (non-TPMS) snow tires on (they weren't Costco tires, no road hazard warranty). Pulled into a parking spot, noticed, left rear was REALLY low. It was a nice sunny day, level, paved, doesn't get much easier than that. But it was FREEZING cold: while in Costco shopping I made sure to get some nice cozy/grippy gloves, a 3 pack (of course), and I always leave one pair in the car now.

Don't feel ashamed. I think we're all thrilled that you've recovered to this point after all those amazing injuries. Too bad you had the flat, but great that you could get the job done. I'm happy for ya.

I've always heard it called a "crown."

I see no shame in showing us how much you have recovered from those horrid injuries. Keep on that recovery path!

    Congrats kiddo....
I know healthy 20-somethings that would be challenged by this task in dry weather.

After everything you've been through....this is Everest on a clear day!!

The crown of the road. Yes. Did not appreciate that crown much, as it made the car slant toward falling over.

you obviously aren't a part of my better ½'s culture .... where shame is an integral part of everyday life

That said, with most cars not even having a spare nowadays, I ordered one, and included in the kit - a battery powered drill to run the scissors Jack, which also has enough oomph to remove & install the lugs.

One could downplay the significance of this event.
But coming back from injury accident or not?
I'm not sure too many people born after 1995 can change a tire. For the smart phone generations, who think road side assistance is an act of maintenance, knowing how to change a tire is becoming a lost art.
    So good job.
