I hit 49.9 mpg today, three pips left

How amount of gas left has nothing to do with MPG. I drove about 60 miles on a full tank and I got 50 MPG. It has since come down to 48 with more city driving.

 

You can fill up at any time (although the mileage won't reset unless 3 gallons go in). I generally fill at 2 pips, but have filled up at 3, especially if I know a big trip is coming up.

 

I almost always drive mine until the last pip starts blinking and then fill it up. Never have had a problem.

i fill up whenever's convenient no later than soon after i see the second bar go out.

Same here. Unless I know I'll be driving somewhere that's 50-100 miles or more roundtrip in the next day or 2, in that case I'll usually fill up as soon as there are 3-4 pips remaining.

Actually the mileage won't reset when filled up, you have to hit the reset button in the '06.

that being said, treat it like a normal car and fill up when you would anything else. For me, i always started looking for a convientient station around 1/4 tank (ie 2-3 pips), and definately before it hit E (so if it hits 1 pip i go to the next one, even if it isn't the most convienient). Just don't push it or try to reason how far you can go based on miles and mileage and you'll be fine.

I have found that my '06 resets the mileage after a fillup, but not the Average MPG. I have to hit the reset to get that to change.

I wonder if it is a setting somewhere?

Nope, that's pretty much jsut the way it is, unfortunately. Previously (ie prior to '06) the car would reset both automatically after a 3 gallon+ fillup. With the '06, no one has found a setting yet to make it do this (if there is one, it's in the maintanence screens or something). The manual, on the other hand, still claims it will do both. very misleading.
