Looking to add a second Gen 2. Is Touring package something to avoid or is it a bonus?

i think most of this car can be brought to as good as new fairly easily and inexpensively.

We have a red touring 2009. I don’t perceive it to be particularly much better than the regular one. Mostly got it just because, at the time, it was more available at the dealer.

you dont want a first gen anything.. they had not worked all the bugs out yet, they are old tech and very expensive to repair.. you cant rebuild a volt battery on the kitchen table for under $100 like a prius and a leaf, well they were junk when new.. ..

I suppose it’s worth mentioning that the preponderance of opinion seems to be that it gets a couple MPG less than the regular version, mostly because it’s tires are 195s instead of 185s.

Just buy a set of stock 15" wheels off craigslist if you don't want to buy 16" tires.
Just don't spend a dollar to save a dime.

Generally speaking that’s true of first year production of any new platform vehicle. But, Gen 1 volts were continually improving through the model years. My 2013 has been great in our 2.5 years of ownership. Only in the shop once for warranty covered work, which were known issues. The prius is not perfect either. It has a few known issues too. Coolant pump, coolant control valve, etc.

My 05 is gen 2 just rolled 295k still on Original Pack.

Well, this car comes with tires, so no worries for at least a year or two since they are not in bad shape. Set of wheels on Craigslist will run more than a difference in price for 4 tires, I reckon. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. I haven't even decided to buy this car.

Totally irrelevant (except for the increased tire cost). There is nothing that special that would make me buy one (or pay a premium) if I was in the market for another gen2. That extra one millimeter of diameter on the sway bar sounds useful, but the touring bar is also hollow inside which means you are getting... an extra millimeter.

If the price is right for the local market, and that new cat is OEM then it sounds like you area ahead of the curve.

Test drive it, you might be able to see what all the fuss is about.

When we were shopping 2010's (different gen, but maybe similar), our first test drive was in a model comparable to US level IV. I was somewhat underwhelmed by the driving feel. It was night, rainy, first impression, maybe coloured things, not sure.

A day or two later we went back, were wandering around the dealership lot, and saw this very dusty "Touring" editions (somewhat comparable to US level V), with the nice 17" rims, LED headlights, fog lights (useless but pretty) and so on.

We asked if they could dig it out (it was way at the back, in a shed) and let us test drive, which they did, and we went back early one afternoon for a drive: I felt at home in that car, the steering feel, suspension. Everything felt planted, sure.

I'm not sure what, but it was a night and day difference, lol.

I did test drive it. But it has 225K miles and the front suspension will need attention. I did not perceive much difference from my non-touring except for looser suspension feel and rougher ride, both attributed to shocks needing replaced all around. Even so, the car drove a lot like my own. I just wanted to know if there are some gotchas that Touring may have. I am not sure if this car will remain a candidate, but if it does, it will not be from anything "better" I noticed due to the touring package. 16" wheels may also contribute to rougher ride due to slimmer profile. Still looking, but this one was actually not bad for what I think I can get it for. Single owner, seemingly honest. It's a well used '07 with 225K miles on her. My own '07 id in much better shape and I bought it for not that much more than what I think I can get this one for and that was a year ago with 175K miles. For now the search goes on.

    306,000 miles and counting.
    Rock solid, still.
Driving style: to make Mario Andretti proud.

OEM HIDs replaced with mercury containing bulbs over 200,000 miles ago. No problems since.

Tires? Yes, more$$, but I put performance tires on.
15” OEM wheels off eBay for take-off winter snows (& better traction).

Rear struts replaced as springs cracked due to corrosion (Rudy belt car).

I thought the 16” rims looked great too. though I found the owners experienced more tire issues (flats and road damage). Surely you can convert it back I love the 15” rims I have now and feel I can get them to perform things the 16”rims would not.

I’m only one data point, but I have not had any rim/tire issues due to size. Nor am I aware of any related posts in Prius Chat.

If you drive like I do, there is a night & day difference. To me, a standard G2 handles like a waterbed with the sex appeal of a Beluga whale.

Being that my car is white, I can’t do much to change how it looks.
It does, however, handle better than a waterbed.

JBL is a nice upgrade, too, if you enjoy tunes while you’re driving.

I was hoping for a follow up, too (besides my own), but all I can offer is another 30,000 miles and a little more rust.

I do have a new front end though, after hitting Bambi, so from the front, looks like a new car!
