Using the same thumb drive (I think it’s 2GB. It’s was a free PRIUS branded stick from Toyota), I can play some videos and not others. All are .mp4 formats. Anything else I should look for specifically in the file format to determine whether a file is playable without having to upload and try each and every file in the car?

Please don't watch videos and drive.

You can do that on your phone - or I should say, your passenger can do that on their phone. You drive. Wait until autonomous vehicles are out, then do what you want. In the meantime stop increasing the risk of accidents for yourself, your passengers, pedestrians, and all other vehicles around you.
    Seriously.

Never tried using this feature, but I am almost sure if it does play video on the screen TOYOTA has designed it so that it only plays it while it is at PARK only. After all, they don't even let the music list to scroll more than a few pages if the car is in READY and in motion.

I read on this forum that playback only occurs on park and/or emergency break activated - but I can't get it to work.
Whoever wants to be irresponsible and play videos while driving, that's not up to me to stop or monitor ...
But here's a scenario : if you are on a road trip stopping for food or to take a break, why not enjoy a TV series or movie that you could preload into a USB stick? (of course free or properly licensed purchased content).
It's more practical to use your cell phone and get on YouTube, right? but this could be useful if you have some preloaded content to play for your passengers while you look up your next stop or send out an email etc... just trying to learn more about this feature is all.

The manual shows the following information (attached) on compatible video files, but I can't verify that it plays back anything yet...
would be interested to see anyone here try this out since I'll be away from my car for a while.

I haven't figured it out. I have two different AVIs and one plays and the other doesn't show up on the list. No idea why.

Has to be the encoding on the file, going to guess it was such a terrible experience you never bothered making it work - was it playback during parked / emergency break on? or any other usage notes from your experience using this feature?

Yup pretty much. I was hoping to do the same as you - watch while waiting.

Yes it plays only in Park and the parking brake is engaged. If the parking brake is disengaged, it'll only play the audio.

It only plays on the bottom half (which is fine) but "Full screen" isn't full screen - there's still a border so it's a bit smaller than you'd expect. (as in I was expecting a borderless video playing on the bottom half of the screen but it had a border).

If anyone can figure out how to get it to read PDF files, I could leave the huge owners' manual at home and be able to quickly look up anything I need to know about the vehicle. Of course, that would be too practical and nowhere near as much fun for the car dealers to demo.

Just load the PDF into your android phone or an old phone and leave it in the glove box.

Still cannot get the car to even show the video files.. only had success with audio files, no video files seen.
Tried several formats but it must have something to do with the encoding not being "just right" for the car to see them.
