Trying to see if anybody can give me some good reviews on how it’s been working out. I’m thinking about trying it out. It’s about $1200 for the full kit so before I pay I was hoping to get some feedback on how it is working. I have a 2017 prime advance. I have seen a few videos on youtube. But is it still worth it?

I personally have no experience with it, but from this video (below) at least, one possible downside would be that the unit could block important vision to the right.

Prii have historically had their rear-view mirrors mounted low enough on the windshield to partially obscure the view to the right, for taller people at least. This unit seems to hang below the mirror, obscuring even more.

@illumiN8i seems to be the guy to ask question.;) I thought about buying it last summer when I was driving 600+ miles on interstate almost every weekend, but I didn't. WOW, is it now costing $1200? Last year when I look at the site, they still had the whole kit for ~$600.

comma AI is indeed quite interesting. I have no direct experience, but from what I gather, it would only be useful to a person doing a lot of highway driving. It doesn't really work at intersections as it longer finds proper lines and, obviously, it won't work if there is snow mucking up the lines.

But just the idea of going on a loooong road trip with this makes me smile :)

I got it a couple of months ago on our 2018 Level II with safety package. It works great!

The cost vs factory installed solution (like Tesla autopilot) was a no-brainer. My hope is to port it over to our Clarity which isn't "officially" supported but since it's an open sourced platform there are a few folks working on that car too.

The EON unit just updated to version 0.7 so it's still very early on which makes what it can do even more impressive. I recently did a 400+ mile interstate roundtrip and the number of times I needed to take over could be counted on one hand. You still need to pay attention to the road (AKA drive!) but you don't have to actively steer 98% of the time. Is it perfect? Nope, it's still Beta but the potential is very obvious when experienced.

The main benefit is similar to the difference between old style cruise control and advanced cruise control. Basically the overall driving load is lessened (especially compounded over hours of driving) and that means a more alert and fresh driver. It also reads the scene better than either the stock Prius or Clarity systems because it's using both the cars' stock hardware and the commai EON unit.

Bottom line: we like it so much (beta warts and all) that it's become a mandatory requirement that our next future vehicle purchase be either commai qualified or have a (better) factory solution.

*** Thanks for the feedback. I drive 8 hours on the highway twice a week sometimes more. And it would help me a lot! I would rather have a reliable Toyota doing the auto pilot then a Tesla at this time.

Last year EON only cost $600. You needed a $400 harness to connect to car. Price increase for new comma 2 and harness is about $200.

Yeah, makes it almost a no-brainer for you.

Here's another analogy: The captain of a grand ol' sailing ship doesn't steer the ship; rather he's responsible for getting the ship safely to port, sets the course, watches for hazards and navigation points, wind direction, etc., and directs others to do the tedious things. Commai becomes the ships' crew and the driver become the captain.

Thanks. I did not look into detail, but when I added up what I though I needed for a full kit, I can't remember seeing a separate $400 harness in the cart. Wasn't the system designed to just connect to OBDII? In any case, with the increased cost now at $1200, it probably is not worth for consideration for me any more. I don't plan to do as much interstate driving as I did this summer.

Absolutely worth it @Pdxprimeguy . Openpilot on the Prius is game changing technology. Once you have it you'll never want to go back. Prices are going to continue to go up as the tech improves and comma.ai pushes for profitability. If you can't afford the new kit, the old kits still work fine and are still available on the shop and in private sales as people are selling them used after upgrading @Salamander_King .

The reliance on lane lines has been greatly reduced as the AI improves. It can now cruise through intersections just fine @Prime Alex . Performance with obscured lane lines has improved as well. Updates are released about once a month. Placement on the windshield is somewhat flexible and you can move it up to avoid obstructing your view @mr88cet

If you have questions I'll be happy to answer on the comma.ai discord chat.

Essentially the EON (basically a beefed up android smartphone) is the brains while the additional Panda, which is more brand/model specific, is the interface between the EON and OBD port. $600+$400=$1,000 for the commai one. The just released commai two is $1200 for both items.

A fairly big improvement (at least to me) is the Two has an auto cut-off for the 12v power supply to the EON. The One doesn't and will run down the 12 battery if left connected unused for several days. BTDT As we know, that's not good for battery health.

The biggest neg. for me living in the hot, sunny south is the EON shouldn't be left mounted in the sun/hot weather. I don't think my wife has the discipline to remove/install it on a daily commuter basis. I'm not sure I would either.

I've also had it for about a year. Just keep in mind this is not yet a consumer product and may have some quirks. Once it gets to 1.0, then it should be consumer ready!

The discord community is very helpful. I've put about 10K miles on the highway with it, and it keeps getting better with each release. If you have a lot of highway driving, then its great. Also great for slow moving traffic jams. With the prime, you have to keep engaging it if it comes to a stop during traffic. Otherwise I have no complaints! I've gone as long as one hour on the highway with just touching the wheel twice due to other drivers cutting in!

Feel free to ask any other questions!

How long and how easy was the install?

What model prime do you have? And is it the basic install for either advanced model or the other ones?

I’m hoping it’s as simple as they show in the YouTube videos.

Also how does it perform in rain weather?

It actually does pretty well. Even in downpours it can read the road lanes. However, I personally don't use it in the rain, as I'm not too comfortable with the concept of a computer driving me in the rain yet. Keep in mind it's one of those things where you have to keep your eye on the road at all times. This is not a system to take over any of your responsibilities.

Install on the Prime is just about as easy as they show in the installation videos. Only tricky part on the Prime Advanced/Limited is there is less room to work inside the Toyota camera cover due to the Homelink mirror wires getting in the way.

    Hey Man!

Thanks for the forks! Question - Do I need to reinstall the fork for 0.7 since I did it in 0.6?

Not sure which fork you're using. The code I maintain has all been updated to 0.7 and that's just for other unofficially supported cars, not Prius. DM me on comma.ai Discord and we can discuss further.

Edit: Oh, didn't realize you had a 2019 Prime. Your PriusChat profile says 2018. My openpilot fork branch for taking advantage of the new steering sensor in 2019+ has been updated, so if you're still on 0.6 try uninstalling and re-installing.

That’s an excellent point, says this Austinite!

I think that, before I even consider it, I’ll wait for the software version number to come up to something more like 2.3, say. 0.6 doesn’t sound very comforting!

One of the main selling points of the new comma two product is that it can be installed permanently and won't overheat in the sun. openpilot is expected to be consumer ready by version 1.0. They're working hard on stability.

    Both good to hear!

I’ll probably still wait for something more like 2.3 though.

I was watching videos of it in-use, and I’m pretty sure that it will automatically disengage if you override its steering movements, right?

If so, I’m wondering how much force you have to apply to override it. (Some have complained that Tesla AutoPilot requires too much force, although most seem good with it.) I hope it’s at least somewhat on the high side, because I would still keep my hands on the wheel (and of course eyes on the road) with this.
