2005 Prius- Overhaul Strut-Wheel & Hybrid Battery Conditioning

    Nice work documenting your project.

    I don't understand this. The two bolts should be the same length. Are you saying that one bolt was actually shorter than the other? Was this true on both sides of the car?

    PW-- Thank you and Correct--the two bolts "should" be the same size but obviously the previous owner/mechanic had "short-bolted" me 1:8 bolts;). I have the bolt downstairs, and will upload a comparative shot later. Glad i was doing the work myself, and found the deficit. But prior to this strut project, it was just long enough to hold the earlier struts; but with the new struts, that bolt was dangerously SHORT.

    Did you use the standard strut assemblies or opt for the Touring Package ones? I REALLY need to get the HV pack maintenance done :)

    O5P-- I used the standard strut assemblies from a generic retailer online. Wondering what goodies the Touring Package provides.

    How good are you with details and tinkering? The HV battery conditioning I performed was very challenging and may require a full 2 days weekend timeline. If you already are experiencing HV glitches & know that you will have to replace a cell, then you better get comfortable and unfold a repair table and stretch out. That also means preordering 1-3 cells and having handy a battery recharger. My research reveals one will need to get underneath the battery tray and fully account for all those loose bolts. Best to have a plan B nearby, such a speed dial to a Prius battery guru who can swoop in and clean up what you cannot get to. Remember your PREP of stripping away the upholstery and prearing the battery tray goes a long way in shaving away time for "actual maintenance" getting done.

    OK, i had some follow-on battery failure the other day... really freaky!
    OBD2 codes P3022, P3016, battery fan was constantly on, and CEL and red triangle of death (RTD).

    Andrewclaus. Your warning turned up!
    I had to revisit the battery bay due to lack of a torque wrench, as i just HAND TIGHTENED bolts with only the 3/8 extension socket stem. While inside the battery I cleaned all the copper connectors and doused them and the battery cell bolt ends in that dielectric clear grease. All the 28 cells were consistently between 8.01 - 8.07A. Drove it around the block and the CEL-RTD never returned. Hope this stays.

    Thank you for following up and highlighting the importance of correctly torquing the nuts and bolts.

    Side note... folks may want to consider using a 1/4 in drive when initially installing the 8mm nuts on the battery terminals. Helps keep torquing at a minimum. A 3/8 drive is really easy to overdo it with.

    How are the four (4) bearing hubs and the four (4) struts holding up?

    When dousing the module posts and bus bars, what brand of clear dielectric grease did you use?

    OT: Noticed you picked up a another gen3, have you had a chance to replace any struts or hubs using similar generics?

    now for a ~3 year update since last...

    - SOLD OFF. I sold this silver 2005 Prius, 2x years ago to my big sister in Washington DC; mileage at selloff 120k, now in JAN2020 mileage at 150k; she loves it as its their 3rd car daily driver; she owns 2018 Silverado, 2019 Wrangler Rubicon. She and her husband drive this Prius like a regular car, zipping in and our of DC traffic and unaware of "pulse gliding." They get high 40's in mileage/gallon. They will probably tire of the car at year 5, by the time it hit 200k miles. Their "thing" is buying new cars; and them buying my car was only a gap fill.

    - 4x BEARING HUBS, 4x STRUTS. As per my sister, the 2005 silver Prius is still driving very smooth at lower and higher- highway speeds, with no clunking nor creeking, and no bumps/bobbing. Its a real smooth ride. They say it rides smooth, akin to a new car.

    - DIALECTIC GREASE. I used Permatex.

    - NEW 2010 PRIUS model-V. Yes i picked up another gen3 model-V complete with leather, heated seats, and low-riding tires. I have only replaced 1x passenger-side rear bearing hub due to failure, prompted by an OBD2 dash light warning; i forget now what the code was but it lead me to use my techstream and discover a slower and failing bearing. I used a generic, cheap Chinese aftermarket product. Since I purchased it I replaced: 1x traction battery module and 1x 12V battery.
