apple introduced itunes7 today and one of the undocumented features is a new checkbox in the advanced/burning section of the application preferences that enables cdtext!

now you can burn discs from itunes with titles that the prius can read

    WOOHOO!

    it's a free download.

Definately good to know... although i think i'll still keep myself CD-less and stick with the iPod.

On the positive side, yesterday i figured out how to stream iTunes from my house to my work computer, which means i don't have to drag my iPod out of the car every day to take it into work with me.

Follow these directions at your own risk. the author is not responsible for any harm you may do to yourself or your computer by attempting them. Read all instructions before beginning. if you do not have the knowledge or experience with computers in order to safely perform all procedures, it is recomended you don't attempt them. following these instructions could cause you to make your computer more open to malicious software and individuals.

    Do the following at home:
    0. Your windows account at home must have a password set for this to work. So create a password if you don't already have one. Plus, every list should start with 0. :-p
    1. download an SSH server (http://sourceforge.net/projects/sshwindows) and install. To set up, go to the command prompt and browse to the directory where it installed (usually C:\program files\openssh\) and then the bin directory (so with the default settings you would type "cd "C:\Program Files\OpenSSH\bin""). From there, type in "mkgroup -l >> ../etc/'group" and "mkgroup -l >> ../etc/passwd" (those are lower case L's). Right click on My Computer and go to manage. In the screen that pops up, expand out the bottom choice (Services and Application) and select the services option. On the right side of the window, scroll down to OpenSSH and select it, then select start to start the service (I believe it'll automatically start up with windows after this).

    2. Do you have any firewalls installed? If so, you'll have to open two ports for the firewall - port 22 and port 3689. for specifics on this, I'd refer you to the firewall's producer (although I could figure it out for ya in like 5 min or less if I was sitting there)

    3. are you using a router between the cable modem and your computer? If so, you'll have to do port forwarding for the above listed ports. While routers do differ, generally you can go access the settings from http://192.168.0.1 (or 192.168.1.1, etc depending on the brand, check your ip address on your computer and go with whatever that is replacing the last number with a 1) and from there find the port forwarding options. Note - you'll have to reserve an address for your computer or have your computer set a static IP in order to ensure it's always forwarding to the IP your computer is on.

    4. Download a free DNS service. These can be found at dyndns.org or no-ip.com. Sign up, download their application and run it in the background, with whatever URL you want (mine's eagle33199.servebeer.com). That way you'll have a static address always pointing to your dynamic IP.

    5. Enable file sharing in iTunes (and leave iTunes running). Go to edit->preferences, the sharing tab, and select the "share my music" option.

    At work now:
    6. install iTunes (duh).

    7. install the SSH tunnel program, http://www.delight.ch/delight.ch/index.php?s=48 (click on "Herunterladen" to download). After installing, run it. Go to tunnel->add and put in the following information:
-SSH Host: whatever you picked as your URL
    -SSH Port: 22
    -Local Port: 3689
    -Remote Host: 127.0.0.1
    -Remote Port: 3689
    -Username: your windows username
    -Password: your windows logon password
-SSH Key File: Leave this blank
    -Forward: Local to Remote
-Auto connect: on if you want it to connect when the program is started
    -Compression: on
-Do Keep-Alive-Ping: off, unless you experience problems with it dropping
    -SSH1/SSH2: SSH2

Hit test, it should say its fine, and then hit save. Double click the icon there with whatever name you gave it, and a padlock will appear on it when it connects. minimize it to the tray.

    8. download http://ileech.sourceforge.net/index.php?co...sProxy-Download and install. This program tells iTunes to look at the tunel for shared music. Run it and click add host. Put in the following info:
    -IP address: 127.0.0.1
    -Port: 3689
-Host Label: Whatever you want it called
    -Service Text: Leave blank
    -Service Type: _daap._tcp.(iTunesHost)

Once set up, minimize it to the tray.

    9. if your work computer has a firewall, you'll need to open port 3689.

    10. Enjoy your music!

Given the disclaimer above, do at your own risk. Opening the ports in any firewall you may use, or forwarding them from your router will make you more vunerable than you were before, however, at the time of this post, i am not aware of any malicious code that will exploit this. always use secure passwords (No, your dogs name concatonated with your son's birthday doesn't count. get something completely random, like 4&fl!d9).

Also, while streaming music from your home computer to your work computer for personal use is perfectly legal (assuming you purchased the music to begin with), giving others the username/password and sharing the connection wouldn't be legal (as it goes beyond personal use).

Kona, exactly which checkbox should I check? Is it the Mp3 Cd option or is it the Data CD option, or is it neither?

I burned one yesterday to try it out and it will give me song name but not artist.

And also, say i Burned 6 albums onto one MP3 disc, can I make folders for each album? I'm a bit confused on all of this.

    okay....

from itunes preferences, choose ADVANCED > BURNING > "INCLUDE CD TEXT"

    that should have it!

I installed it last night, but decided to switch back. I really preferred the interphase of itunes7, but was now unable to sync my calendar with the iPod. Since that meant giving up something I used for something I might never use, it was best for me to drop back. :(

Pity, I really liked itunes7. They've added movies and games to the iPods store, which requires itunes7.

Microsoft Outlook 2000 (and it won't work with Thunderbird). If you have the 2003 version, it works, but not an earlier version. I could either spend $100 and get that version, remove all of the announcements (and just use it as a calendar) or go back to itunes6.

It's a minor thing, but I can now sync the calendar with both my iPod and my e815, and it's nice to be able to check if the weekend is free.

This is a great find, thanks for pointing it out! I've been using Toast to make discs with CD-Text. It will be much easier to use iTunes. What took them so long to add this?

I've got a gray long-haired tabby... Will it work on that?

Seriously though, I do like the new iTunes. Nice cleaned up interface. Don't think I'll ever get any movies or games (even though I've got the video iPod), but it's still better than the previous version.

A question though. It now has the option to download all missing album art. I ripped all my own CD's into iTunes, and it doesn't have an cover art for those CD's. Is there an easy way to get those in there? It doesn't seem to want to do it.

That's pretty cool. Too bad it's only for mp3's though, I encode my albums in AAC.

If itunes doesn't sell the cd then they wont have the artwork. I just went to Amazon.com and right clicked an image of the cd, posted it in paint, adjusted the size, and then pasted it in the window that says "drag artwork here". Kinda tidious but works fairly well. Not as good as an image from itunes, but at least you have it there :)

Thanks, I'll try that. What I'm wondering though is why even the albums they sell don't load the picture. I just happened to already have the CD, so I didn't buy from iTUnes. I tried to drag their cover art, but no luck.

for cover art, the best source is amazon. take their "enlarged" view and save the JPEG to your desktop, then in itunes, highlight the songs you want to have the cover. if you have itunes set to display cover art, make sure it's set to "selected songs" and drag the JPEG in. that's it.

I loaded iTunes 7 and the "Include CD Text" option is grayed out on my preferences screen. Does anybody else have that problem, or am I missing something? Is it supposed to work on MP3 and regular audio CDs?

The fact it's grayed out may mean your CD drive isn't capable of burning CD text.

I considered that, although I have a fairly new HP Datascribe CD/DVD R/W drive (less than 1 yr old). I'll check the specs and see if it supports CD Text. Thanks.

CD Text is not for cd's with mp3's or AAC files, it is for cd's burned as audio.
