At 260,000 this 2007 Gen-2 is now burning oil; 3 quarts (Walmart full synthetic 5-30 high-mileage) every 6,000 miles. The code came up for a clogged catalytic converter just before my inspection so I ran Cataclean , the code cleared (passed inspection) and I noticed a significant improvement in acceleration and 4 mpg jump in fuel economy.
I'd like to try an oil catch can that would drain into a large reservoir. Something that could hold a quart of oil (otherwise I would be draining the can constantly).
After looking at the selection of cans (including on Chat) , the Mann Provent 200 (many knock-offs) caught my attention. These are large and seem effective at removing oil but with a very small reservoir. I was going to drain the Provent 200 catch can down to the side of the front wheel well into a large reservoir (at least a quart)
    Is this going to work?
Is there room to squeeze a Provent 200 into the engine compartment? I don't mind paying for oil but cataclean is expensive and the first treatment only lasted a week before the performance went back to what is was before. Massachusetts requires a compliant catalytic converter (expensive).
I'd like to get 2 more years and hit the 300,000 mark on this daily driver. Any thoughts? Better options?

The PCV (valve) is on the top of the intake on Gen-2. If oil is blowing by the rings will I catch much of this oil with a catch can? Any other options for keeping the oil from fouling the CAT? (other than a rebuild or replacement).

Would an approved "Toyota recommended engine treatment" or "Marvel Mystery Oil" be a more productive remedy to sludged up sticky/gummy rings? What about a switch to 2,000 mile oil changes ?
Note: I do get a very annoying burning smell in the passenger compartment when the vehicle is idling (not moving). There are no leaks in the exhaust, I thought the plugged up CAT might be causing the smell because the smell dissipated for a short while after the Cataclean.

I've been reading more of the oil consumption posts on Chat while waiting for the moderator's review of my post. I'm leaning towards following the advice of "PETER123" by cleaning the EGR valve and tube, trying a flush (leery of snake oils), and another can of Cataclean and also replacing the PCV and adding a catch can (to see what I can catch). Possibly trying a higher viscosity oil? peter.JPG

Obviously, Peter123 is talking about a Gen 3. Gen 2 does not have an EGR.

It would be a good idea for you to limit your research to the Gen 2 forums. (Hint: Use Advanced Search)

Thanks, my search must have wandered a generation. Any way to keep the oil out of the CAT?
I'm still not sure how these Atkinson engines circulate exhaust gas.
