I recently purchased a 2013 Prius three with 100k. After reading the forum extensively I’ve come to the conclusion that these cars have oil consumption issues. Is this universal or does it only effect certain cars? I drive about 30k a year and I want to make sure I’m not
Going to be unfolding a series of problems. This vehicle seems to have been taken care of and is in pristine condition. The services of looking to do at 100k are, transmission fluid, inverted fluid, engine coolant and spark plugs.

thank you all for your time!

    kind regards,
    Travis

The problem is common but not universal.
Keep an eye on your oil level for a while and you will soon know if you have a problem or not.

Not a matter of IF it’s more of “when.” The piston rings are bad pre-2015, period.

Yeah good stuff. Definitely do the transaxle fluid right away. Engine coolant is 100K miles or 10 years. Inverter coolant is 150K miles or 15 years. Spark plugs are 120K miles or 12 years.

Brakes should have a full inspection 30K miles or 3 years.

Yeah clean the intake manifold and EGR circuit now. With 100K miles you're not overdue, but it is due.

Are you DIY'ing, or dealership, or a mix?

    Awesome I appreciate all
The help. I’ve been reading non stop on the matter and it seems that for some it takes longer than others. Has anyone done a motor swap with a 2015 Prius that has the revised rings and piston?

I’ve read they have revised the design of the intake manifold, should I just replace the intake manifold when I do the egr circuit cleaning? How often should the EGR be cleaned after? I’m
Debating just replacing the egr pipe and cooler instead of cleaning.

I’m also going to do the oil catch can. Which I’m assuming all of this is to
Thwart off the engine oil consumption.

Oil catch can reduces the goop being dumped into the intake manifold by the pcv circuit. Some of that collects in the intake manifold, possibly lots also goes right through, into combustion chambers, gumming stuff up.

I'm still fussing around with my oil catch can install, it is a bit of an addictive rabbit-hole, at least for me.

At 100K miles nothing will be bad enough to require replacement. That's what dealership would likely propose, but not needed, almost a grand (intake manifold, egr valve and egr cooler). At most I would replace the pliable gaskets on the intake manifold, the ones at connection to engine ports, throttle body, and EGR pipe. Here's some info on that:

The simplest way to see where you're at, is to check the degree of carbon build up in the EGR pipe, a stainless steel connecting pipe between the EGR valve and intake manifold. Watch @NutzAboutBolts video #16 here:

Two or three other videos linked there too, for the full cleaning of the intake manifold, full EGR clean, and Oil Catch Can install.

    Good thread:

    Some tools worth having:

    E8 Torx socket (mandatory)
E6 Torx socket (optional, but good to have, to remove the throttle body studs from intake manifold)
3/8" ratchet wrench, regular and long handle, flex head, you can never have enough (or 1/2 plus reducer)
1/4" ratchet wrench, or 3/8" to 1/4" reducer
Ratchet extensions: you can never have enough
Long needle nose piers, straight and bent tip
Ratcheting 12mm box wrench (optional, but makes disconnection of the EGR cooler from exhaust easier)
Torque wrench (3/8" and 1/4" both good to have)
Floor jack and safety stands (or ramps): basically some method to raise front, if you need to take underpanel off, which you may need to, both for access and to recover dropped items.
