Probably a used car warranty covered a refurb battery. He bought the car at 170k miles

193k is nothing, I bought a 10prius on 234k. As far as you maintain the car and hybrid systems work efficiently, do not sell it. Also the batteries of a hybrid engine are very long-lasting since they are made of ni-mah.
In my view, buying a new car is wasting money, I got my Prius for $3.6k and it is still like new. It gets 50mpg warm times and 45 on cold times and 40 on frigid days. People forget the fact that the most thing you spend on a car is GAS. In my calculation, for 100k period, a Prius owner with average 47mpg against a 24mpg car saves roughly $5k

What price of gas did you use for X in your math equation in gas saved?

I agree the math can be $5k savings per 100k miles depending on what the alternative might have been. In my case it was a Tundra truck and I am sure the v saved me at least $10k in gas over 200k miles.

However there are expensive parts that could chew up that savings such as the battery (usually replaced by 200k for $2500), the egr (about $1000 at a dealer), the Brake Accumulator and Actuator (at least $2300 at a dealer) and some maybe expenses like a head gasket (again $2500). The odds are good that you will stay slightly net positive but driving new to 150k might be a better bet.

Its interesting that Toyota has extended all 2020 hydrid battery warranties to 150k miles. They know how long they will last.

If you sell at 150k it has some residual value that can be used to partially cover a new one. Clearly any car over 200k is at the bottom of the running legal car pricing which is usually $2 - $4k. It can be a dicey decision to replace a head gasket, battery or brake actuator on a $2k car rather than junk it.

That's more or less our plan. Used cars are overpriced these days, yet there are deals to be had on new cars. Financing is cheaper on new cars, too. On the other hand we replaced a 32mpg hatchback with our c, so the savings are going to feel more like $2600 per 100k miles.*

Given that we could have replaced the 32mpg hatchback with a 35mpg hatchback for about $4k less, this Prius is going to have to last about 8 years or 200k miles without major breakdown just to break even.

Economics aside, we liked the c better anyway. Quieter, smoother & better safety record than the other subcompacts we considered.

*assuming the same $2.50/us gal used elsewhere in this thread for comparison's sake

I see in another thread that the op got a warranty battery from carquest because the previous owner had already changed it once. The op installed the second carquest hv battery himself. Given the carquest battery did not last long, it was probably a refurb.
