I was surprised when the car announced "Police reported ahead." Did anyone else encounter this?

I'm sure he meant his 2020 Prime. Unless you picked up a '19 prime.

Were you using carplay? Waze will say that through carplay even if it is only running in the background. I don’t think it’s the car.

I assume that is from your 2020 Prime. Never heard the police report, but mine often warns of slow traffic ahead. I have wondered what the source of that information is and how it gets to the GPS system.

    Or ...
Waze on CarPlay or just Bluetooth?
I doubt Toyota lawyers would endorse any police avoidance features.

So if you are stopped and given a ticket does the car say, "I told you so"?

Good one. Maybe it says, "I tried to warn ya. But nooooo! You never listen to me."

Anyway, I'm guessing it was Waze and the phone was connected to the car.

That may be the case. Out of curiosity, I am trying different navigation apps on driving to work. The built in navigation would have me drive right past an automated gate to the main gate. Apple Maps and Waze do recognize the automated gate.

Yup, sounds like something Waze would utter.
My ancient 2008 Prius Tspirit has Waze running on an old repurposed iPhone 5s - my removable tech upgrade - whenever I am out driving or commuting.
Waze keeps me appraised of any problems along my route and suitably warns me about any Police presence ahead - even though I don’t speed or anything.

On Friday on my way home, I got just such a warning, and sure enough, as I crested a hill, there was a major operation going on with about 12 policemen and other related personnel with a string of about 10 vehicles and their drivers detained and tow trucks ready to take them away.

The Waze database is usually updated by other drivers with Waze installed.

My other upgrade is a Thinkware F800 Pro dual channel dash cam system (with 36 hour parking mode capability aided by a Cellink Neo 6 auxiliary battery installed under my seat) that does a lot more than just dash cam duties.

I should call my Prius the Millennium Falcon .

Reminder to unfamiliar users: Waze is now owned by Google. So while Waze and Google Maps have different interfaces and look-and-feel, the underlying traffic / construction / road closure information used for adjusting guidance ought to be the same these days.

I also haven't noticed anyplace on Google for users to feed back such information to the provider. But I have been seeing Google present some of the warnings that used to be unique to Waze.

No need to give Google traffic info. They are tracking all their users and can see that traffic is stopped. They just don't know why.

I have the location enabled on my android phone, but it is cellular data disabled. Google may extract my location info at some time when I connect to WiFi, but no real-time location info should be leaking to Google when I am off WiFi. However, cellular radio signal base location info maybe trackable in real time? I don't know if Google has access to that info. My SIM is ATT MVNO, and IIRC, ATT has been known to track the location of phones on their network by multilateration of radio signals on cell towers.

They are tracking you unless the phone is totally off. Supposedly anonymously. They are accessing road sensors used by the government combined with data from your cell provider who knows were every phone is that's turned on. It's pretty sophisticated actually. This article explains it pretty well without going too deep. How Google Traffic Works

Edit to add that you don't even have to be using Google Maps to be a part of their data flow.

Stoped traffic does not equal police ambush. What you are saying is typical for Gmaps user. Waze shows police because users report them in real time. Waze users know that. Google users thinks it will only show traffic jams.

Did someone say something about stopped traffic indicating a police "ambush?" I never did.

Yeah, I know that. In fact it's universal for Gmaps users and even non-users.
