Looking for someone to help me troubleshoot possible solutions to this code before I tow my baby (2008 Prius - 165,000 kms - 100,000 miles) to a dealer. My experience level is low, but with a couple youtube videos I can figure things out. Here's a history of my symptoms, sorry if my technical jargon is incorrect, or if I do not have 100% info. I'll do my best.

A few months ago I had CEL come on and using a basic ODBII scanner I pulled code P0440. Researched, figured gas cap, refueled, tightened, cleared code. CEL came back on so I bought a new gas cap, problem went away.

Another month or so goes by and it comes back on, figured I had just gassed up, so I must not have tightened the cap properly so I did, drove for another day it was still on so I scanned and got code P0446 - Evap. Thought to myself I'd clear it and if there was really a problem it'll just come back on and I'll get it fixed.

Instead, the next day or two my car stalled out on my way to work (went into limp mode). Red Triangle of death, all the lights lit up, The red engine light on my computer display, the works. I'm sure you all understand what I mean.

I recently had an oil change at a Juiify Lube spot and I hear there can be issues with them over filling, getting into my filters, knocking off hoses by accident, etc. This problem happened a couple days after my visit to them, so not immediately after so I'm not sure if this is the issue, but may be easily checked.

Gas mileage was normal, no funny sounds, no rough starts prior. My car is safe at my work, but is unable to shift gears. The internal computer turns on, and (I think it goes into Ready mode, would have to confirm the ready light comes on) so I don't think 12v is the issue. I scanned and pulled code P3190, no other codes. I tried clearing the code and restarting. Car computer turns on, begins run cycle, bam, all the lights come back, same code again plus now the dreaded P0A80 plus C1259 & C1310. I've read a lot about these codes and understand the C1259 & C1310 are "repeater codes" plus the P0A80 I think is just saying "Hey, something is wrong, I'm not getting any juice" So I figure something inside the P3190 is the real issue, perhaps related to my previous P0446 issue.

    Additional info:
-I now only have 1 blue/purple bar on my HV battery
-gas was at 3 bars, I added a little more, maybe a gallon (but read I should add 3-5)
-I have smelled a gassy smell in the cabin a few days after the oil change.

So, I'm about to head back to my work and take another look at my car, fuses, loose hoses, MAF, filter, etc. Any advice on further inspections?

Updated info: Just checked 12v, battery checks out okay. Couldn't find any loose wires/hoses. Didn't notice any blown fuses. Did unplug my MAF harness and when I tried to restart the car, the engine did not shut off like it had in previous attempts. The engine did stay on, but really struggled. It sounds like a low, grumbling, unhappy, low powered engine. It loses power to the point of shutting off, but then kicks back on slightly, struggles to stay on. There is no power going to the HV battery. (I'm guessing it wouldn't until the problem is fixed and codes are cleared?).

P3190 is acknowledging Poor Engine Power

Areas to check in order of cost/complexity are:
    • Air induction system - Throttle body
    • Fuel pressure
    • Engine
    • Airflow meter
    • Lack of fuel
    • Engine coolant temperature sensor - Crankshaft position sensor
    • Camshaft position sensor
    • ECM

There should be plenty of existing threads in PriusChat to help with this code, just use the "Advanced Search" feature to limit your searches to the Gen 2 threads. Alternately, do a google search with the 'site:https://priuschat.com' and Gen 2 P3190 keywords to find more than you'll ever need to know.

I hope that helps a little.

Just heard back from the dealer. Cause was from a failed fuel pump. Estimate $1475 (CAD). I'm assuming that's parts + labour (or at least it BETTER be). At 165,000kms - 100,000 miles I'm sure this is not uncommon. I find it interesting though that I've had no loss of efficiency, no rough starts. At the time of failure I had 3 bars of gas. No a bit about my refueling habits, I usually fill up when at 2 bars. Once in a while 1 bar. However, I've never had the gas warning message occur. This to me does not sound like I'm putting too much strain on the pump. I also always fill up at reputable gas stations. Please do correct me if I'm wrong and should change my habits moving forward.
