My speculation is that the "new" ability to accept a rapid shift into neutral does have something to do with years ago, and the rash of "sudden rapid acceleration" cases, where some people claimed the vehicle was accelerating and they couldn't get it to stop.

I wonder what the EXACT parameters of it's usage are.
Because the flip side, is you want to avoid the ability for people to accidentally shift into neutral when they really do not wish to be in neutral.
    So which is more dangerous?
NOT being able to rapidly shift into neutral at high speeds or when accelerating?
OR being able to perhaps accidentally shift into neutral at high speeds or when accelerating?

GM has a similar issue with the 2mode if the 12volt battery is old/no good (and faulty cables)you will have some issues with it causing unintended acceleration.. excessive engine revving i have seen it rev to RED LINE 6,000 RPM with my foot off the gas..
all by it self this is a computer ERROR caused by the auto stop function.

THIS IS PASSED THE "REV GOVERNOR" or "Rev limiter"
this also defeated the Double check safety system

(the throttle plate double sensor and gas peddle double sensor must match...) other wise you get Engine Power Reduced as well as a DTC or check engine light

few times entering an Autostop the SUV actually INCREASED in speed and the engine also increased in RPM with out pushing the accelerator
