12v OEM—AGM or not

Is the Toyota part number 00544-21171-325 an AGM battery?

I have a 2011 Prius v (or 5). I drove for 7 years and got 48.2 MPG average. I had pretty much perfect conditions for MPG. I gave to my son about a year ago. His driving conditions are not conducive for MPG so I think he is down in the low 40’s.

I have never replaced the 12v so I thought that may help. I have occasionally read posts about batteries and cost. From this, I concluded that Prii came with AGM batteries and that would be best.

My local Toyota dealer has a deal on OEM batteries so I thought I may get one. I asked the parts person if 00544-21171-325 was AGM. He had no idea what AGM was. I asked my advisor and he said Prii do NOT have AGM as OEM and that the 00544-21171-325 is NOT AGM.

Can someone tell me what is correct?

Battery is inside the trunk as far as I know, which is why they use AGM because battery acid leak risk is low to none. Parts guy doesn't know, and I guess the service advisor took a 50/50 guess.

That is an AGM battery. (No need to tell him/her until he/she gives you the good price you mention)...

Regardless, an AGM type usually is a better value.
A conventional wet cell type probably would NOT have lasted that long.

Depending on how adventurous you are and how long you can wait, (those guys/gals in China are on Chinese New Year vacation), go to eBay and search for "46B24R LiFePO4". Looks like they'll be back on Feb 1. 1 yr and 3 months in our v (wagon) and going strong.

(Hope they fixed the slight size being a little bit large by now. I added a couple/few washers and longer bolt to hold it down)...

I had to add a washer under one end of the hold down bracket when I installed an Optima Yellow Top. Toyota's bracket design is hopelessly unable to accommodate any variation in battery height. And yeah, that's been sorted out, way back:

I told them about the size issue. They asked me if I could not make it work somehow. It wasn't hard at all as it was just a lip at the bottom that prevented it from sitting down flat. I could have Dremmeled the lip off and sat it properly.

BUT I didn't restate the other big selling points:

It weighed around 9.5 lbs, vs 28 if I recall correctly. It had/has a built in backup if you drain the main cell push the button, which also doubles as a Voltage meter...

(I promised myself if ever a car needs a battery and does not use the bottom hold down method I would get this type. Pb flooded aka lead acid never more).

To the OP, at the least get an AGM. I hate having to remember to pop open the vent caps to check water level...

I'm pretty sure the factory battery was SLA, not AGM. The yellow top is AGM and far, far better. I had two factory batteries die in about 2 years before using the yellow top for 6.5 and replacing it early before it could fail.

Also the 12v battery has nothing to do with fuel economy. It's only there to run the computer until the car is on.

I don’t care what anyone thinks or says.
I been having a Honda Civic battery. $60 wholesale to me brand new. I do that when I need to get a new one and can’t find a Prius battery etc.

instead of asking for a part number, ask for a battery for you model and year. it will be agm, then ask the price
i just bought one. 2012 plug in prius, $200. agm, fit perfect, with vent tube access

Actually, from the picture of the Optima Yellow Top it looks like a spiral/gel cell.

SLA batteries look and feel very much like AGM. Can anyone confirm it's one or the other?

A 12 V that is somewhat weak or going bad, has been reported as taxing the charging system, wasting energy, and hence decreasing MPG....
