Got it. You may need to open up that CD then.

Where did you DL TS from, and what version ? (any version should work fine for your year)

I don't know what DL TS is so I'll answer the 2 things it might be.
I got the mini cord from Amazon. The sticker on it says Mini-VCI J2534 Standard OBDII Communication Interface.
The Techstream download is from Mega , V13.10.029 .exe

PS, it seems I need a newer version of Java, which I'm getting now. Also the program wants me to register it,
asking for a "New Key". How do I deal with that?

    DL = Download
    TS = Techstream

The version you've DL'd doesn't have the installation instructions, but they might be included on the supplied CD o_O

Contact the seller, or take a gamble and use the above blog to find a version that you're comfortable installing.

The recommended link has TS preinstalled in a virtual environment, which may or not make life easier for you

Ugg, I believe I got the program downloaded correctly. Before I can us it it's asking for registration information.
It wants "New Key" info to register the software. It seems I can't proceed by ignoring that. Does anyone have
answers, what I should do next to get this program operational?

This should be covered in the instructions on the CD.

Thanks, everybody, for your support and advice. I'm not done yet but I got the Techstream program downloaded and was
able to use it. I had to move the car so I had to clear the codes by disconnecting the 12 volt battery. Next I'll drive the car
until those codes throw again and then I'll be able to scan it, Thanks for your help everybody.

The above link for the new thread is actually a link to a PM conversation.

No need to start a new thread, best to keep it all contained as you are still dealing with the same issue(s) :

Aloha from quarantine. I can finally get to this car issue.

At the bottom of this message is a link to an old post of mine about this same issue. This should be more concise since I have Techstream now. Shouldn't need that link.

Do I need to put into Techstream the exact model of Prius that I have? How do I learn which model it is?

When checking Techstream, ABS/VSC/TRAC, it says, "Caution - For VSC Vehicles Only : To insure proper communications be sure engine is idling".
I didn't have it idling because I read not to have the engine running when Techstream is plugged in. After that caution the results were, "Selected system is not responding or not available. Please check repair manual for applicable system". "ECU not supported or not Responding."
Should I check that with the engine running?

That same result came on with the following systems , maybe because I don't know which exact Prius I have:

    Engine & ECT
    Hybrid Control
    HV Battery
    Cruise Control
    EMPS
    Transmission Control
    Air Conditioning
    SRS Airbag

The systems that did read were:

Gateway - Code B1271, Combination meter ECU communication stop
Immobilize - Code B2775, Interior Verification to theft deterrent ECU/Smart Key ECU
    Body - None
    Smart Key - None
    Power Source Control - None.

I believe that B2775 code doesn't matter. The car ran fine with it thrown. I believe it's been throwing that code for years with no problems, but Toyota wanted between $1300 and $2600 to make it go away. As stated in my previous thread, I used to have to disconnect the 12v battery for 10 minutes or so to clear the warning lights and be able to drive again. Now for some reason it will start with all those lights a-blazing.

Other issues, when I put my foot into it to open up those 4 barrels, (joking) it does a thunk, thunk ,thunk kind of miss. I changed the spark plugs and put Seafoam in the gas. Idles real nice. Slow acceleration is good but still thunking when I put my foot into it. Thoughts?

Thanks everyone. Sorry for the long one here but I wanted to be thorough. Stay safe.

    ----

    Codes Thrown:

    ABS/VSC/TRAC

    Code Current

*CO200 Front Speed Sensor RH Circuit X
CO205 Front Speed Sensor LH Circuit X
C1259 HV System Regerneative Malfunction X
    *C1310 HV System Malfunction X

That's with the engine at idle and the region switched to Japan

You may want to select North America as the region, and it may not make a difference. Assuming the vehicle was first sold in the US.

Ready the vehicle, and have Techstream running. From the initial splash page for Techstream, the first blue button near the upper left corner should say "Connect to Vehicle", hitting that button should import your related vehicle information into Techstream.

From the "System Selection Menu", is another blue button "Health Check" (near the upper left corner), try that and post the DTCs here.

If the options have changed with newer versions, there are plenty of videos that can walk you through most of the features and functions.

I really don't care if the smart key works or not, unless of course it effects everything else that's going on. Does it? I've had the car for over 5 years and I didn't even know it had smart key.

Were you able to run a "Health Check" within Techstream?

Pretty sure you will have some new DTCs (OBD2 codes) that are worth posting. You can also PM me if you're stuck on something.

If you don't care for SKS (smart key system), you should disable it in the car by toggling the Disable SKS button (which you find below the steering wheel column labeled "Key") to the "in" position. With this button pressed in, the SKS is disabled. To enable again, press the toggle button to the "out" position.

Doing this will lighten the load on the 12 V battery when the car is not being used.

I ran the "Health Check". After many run time errors I was able to check all 14 systems. Once that scan finished nothing happened. All 14 systems in the yellow boxes were there just as before the check. I clicked on every one of them and the same codes were thrown as written above: B1271 and B2775.
In a previous check not mentioned in the above message I got codes,
    C0200,
    C0205,
    C1259. and
    C1310
All 4 were current. The top and the bottom codes had stars by them.

I thinking with all these problems the car is totaled. Do you agree?

No, why would you think that? This is small potatoes.

C0200 and C0205 is set by the VSC system and directs your attention to the left and right speed sensors.

C1259 is set by the ECB system confirming it has heard from the VSC system that it has a problem and there is a code to read on that system.

C1310 is set by the Enhanced VSC system confirming it has heard from the VSC system that it has a problem and there is a code to read on that system.

The B1271 indicates your CM (combination meter) is failing. This typically is a capacitor that needs to be replaced. Matt @Texas Hybrid Batteries (THB) can help you out with that. It is a reasonably easy DIY fix, but you could also get the replacement part and have somebody replace it for you. You will need to get the old CM back so you can return it to THB for a core refund.

The workups for all your codes are already posted by SFO in post #31.

    I hope that helps.

    You guys are awesome!
Thanks. I'm heading to Alaska next week for my work season (bush pilot) and don't want to tear into the car before going. Plenty of getting ready happening right now. I've copied all that fantastic information that you guys gave me and it'll be my project when I get back in October. Thanks so much.
