Hello. Long time listener, first time caller. I have a 2006 Prius with 230K miles. I am on the second HV battery, changed at 100K. I believe this second one is failing, but would like someone to double check my work before I replace. No active codes, but it has been red triangling me off and on over the last month or so. OBD2 couldn’t read code, so I finally bought an XP laptop and TechStream (i have used it in the past). History shows P3000 and P0A80. I am aware of the meaning of these codes and the mileage is down in the 30s, so classic dying battery symptoms. Now for the red herrings…

The only reason I hesitate with a dying battery diagnosis is that this summer my inverter coolant pump died. This car cries wolf so much, I didn’t jump right on it, assuming the red triangle was the 12v battery again as it would come on intermittently. In hindsight, this was when the inverter overheated. My wife drove it like that for a week or two on some hot days. Pump was changed, code went off. So, my only alternative theory to a dead battery would be a crippled inverter that isn’t dead, but isn’t charging sufficiently. Is that a thing? Would there be codes or a diagnostic I could perform to verify a healthy inverter? Another option is that this episode accelerated the death of a sick battery, however it would be good to confirm the inverter is working properly in any scenario.

Only other pertinent info would be that the last 2 years, I have driven this car to the airport weekly, about 10 miles each way and maybe 10-20 miles on the weekend. The rest of the time it sits parked, not good for the battery I know. Now my son is driving it daily, thus I need to get it working properly.

I would want to change the battery pack myself, so if that is the prognosis, current recommendations on rebuilt battery vendors is appreciated. Several of the ones I see online are full service and I know there are shoddy rebuilds out there. Not interested in changing individual cells, just the whole pack. Looking for the highest quality after-marketer, not the dealer.

Here are some screen shots of techstream battery monitor with battery readings in various conditions:

Best bet is a new aftermarket from ‘new Prius batteries.com’ $1,600.

For 1600 you can get a brand new oem one. That’s what I just did. Super easy to replace the whole thing.

yeah, for that money I can get a reconditioned one installed. Any comments on my diagnostics or the inverter question? Also, where I can get a reconditioned self install?

Bump. Anyone willing to comment on my voltage/ohm readings? Are those out of spec? Inverter advice? What I have read is that you are looking for a 1.2v variance across cells and I don’t see that. 13v range is low however.

Just use the DR Prius app. It will tell you if things are out of spec. That’s how I found out my battery was bad and the dealer confirmed it.

Why would you spend the same money on a reconditioned battery, when you can buy a new for the same? That makes no sense. In fact, no one should pay more than $500 - $600 on a reconditioned battery, and you should only buy a reconditioned battery if you were trying to eke out 1 - 6 months out of the car before calling it a day.
This is just but one thing to look for and it indicates a cell within the module has died.

The ECU is also looking for other things and it might be only 0.3 - 0.4 V difference between the highest and lowest under load – either charging or discharging. As mentioned the Dr Prius app can do that kind of (load) testing.

You can also look at the data page for the P0A80 DTC and see whether the car was charging/discharging (look at the current value) and you can also see the voltage of each of the 14 blocks (2 modules per block) at the moment the code was set.
