Did dealership really rotate my tires if wheel lock is still unwrapped in trunk?

Just back from an awful experience at the stealership - 2 hours+ waiting for just an oil change and tire rotation on my 2017 Prime - with an appointment. I was reading the horrible reviews on Yelp for this dealership to kill time, and came across one that said one of their wheels came off after leaving the dealership. So I figured I better check the lug nuts on mine when I got home. I pulled the wheel covers off and was surprised to find wheel locks! Looked in the owners manual - nothing. Finally checked the tool kit in the trunk and found the key - still sealed and untouched in its clear plastic pouch. Does anyone know if the dealership has a set of keys, or did they just not bother rotating the tires. I got them to knock off the charge for the rotation in lieu of the long wait.

They should have a complete set. They don’t want to waste time looking where you hid yours.
If the locks were dealer installed they somehow did it without using the key that is still sealed.

isnt tire rotation part of the initial 2 year free service?
or did you not get that with the 2017?

This was the first service after the 2 year free service. Was going to do the oil and filter myself but got a coupon from the dealer for $45 synthetic change, so had them do the rotation as well.

They have a Master Key at the service bay and they don't need ours.

Yeah, there is the tooth fairy and the Easter bunny, too.

Almost all of the so called "universal keys" are hammered on, grip the wheel lock with teeth and scar the chrome surface. There would be marks on the wheel lock body. If there are non on your particular locks, they were not removed.

Toyota uses McGard locks that does not issue a "universal" key.

OK..so you've already gotten responses that say YES, they rotated your tires, and NO, they didn't.
Truth is? You're probably never going to know. The only thing you know, is that the dealership didn't touch the keys.

If they put rotate tires on the service invoice? If they charged you? Might as well assume they did, because they aren't going to admit they didn't.

With the bad reviews of this dealership, and your personal experience, I think the answer is to switch dealerships, and look at those YELP reviews BEFORE you're sitting in the waiting room having them do service work.

Next time you can make it a bigger issue before handing your keys over, point out that you have wheel locks.
I've even read posts where people go to the trouble of marking their tires with chalk, so they can tell the rotation has been done.

But honestly, in this situation I just think your stuck never really being able to know. It's too late.

I have marked my tires R1, R2, L1, L2 with a paint pen. So I know when or if they are rotated. Tire rotation twice a year to coincide with winter change over. Odd number tires (R1, L1) in front in odd number years (2017, 2019, 2021...). Even number tires (R2, L2) in front in even number years (2018, 2020...).

I mark a small part of the stem of the front or back tires with a sharpie on all of our vehicles to verify such things.

Unfortunately this proved useful for us on at least one occasion where tires were not rotated. The occasion did not happen at a Toyota service center, but a chain oil/tire/brake place where the adviser initially insisted at pickup that the tires were rotated. When I showed him how this was demonstrably incorrect he apologized and rotated them on the spot.

I recently vacationed a thousand miles away from home and realized my key was not in the car. It made me seek a local Toyota dealership in Georgia to change the tires back to regular lugnuts(They said they had a key). After reading this thread I found mine, and looked for tell-tale signs of forced removal. There aren't any.

Even without locks, they might not rotate the tires. Know people that make a mark on a tire so they can check after to see if a rotation has been actually done, and caught places not doing it.

Luckily for me, when I'm at my dealership, I can see into their 52 service bays... I've actually been lucky enough to see my car(s) several times have the tire rotation done by looking out the waiting room window. I wish you luck and would probably go to another more reputable service department.

As far as time, I have sat there and watched my car just sitting in the bay waiting for a mechanic to get to it. But they are pretty upfront about their time for me to wait, and they usually beat it.

I wonder if the OP noticed the tire treads are more or less on the front tires than the rear?
That would be a definite tell-tale sigh if the tire rotation was done for the first time in 2 years for his 2017 Prime?

The wheels should have been rotated several times with the US free maintenance?

Just a thought about wheel locks: ditch them, get 4 more regular lug nuts? The special socket can get lost, and it's an extra hassle with every tire rotation. I did that a few years, got Gorilla nuts that were dead-rings for the OEM.

That is where a tread depth gauge becomes useful. See an example in Rob's post #9.

Wheel locks on a Prius? Who is going to buy Prius wheels from a thief? The thief targets what he knows he can resell.

Are the original lug nuts in the car in addition to the locking lugs? Or did they go back to the parts department bin to be sold to someone?

My thought is that the locks are just an added profit item for the sales team. I refused them.

I believe the kit is 4 keyed nuts and 1 keyed socket.

It’s not a single, universal key, but rather the Wheel Lock Master Key Set, Toyota part number 09999-00110. This is an essential special service tool, so all dealers are required to have it, and the Master Index (PDF) says it’s kept in Drawer 16 of the SST Storage System, with its friends the Spare Tire Lock Master Key Set (09999-00310), TRD Master Key Set (09999-00410), and TRD Master Key Set Supplement (09999-00411).
