    Steps:

    1. Ensure parking brake is set..
    2. Push start button twice without foot on brake pedal. (dash display should look pretty much like if the car is fully on, aka "Ready")
    3. Depress brake pedal (not parking brake) and shift to Neutral.

    Not working?

    Yes not working
Twice on the start button gets accessory mode right ? The dash was in accessory mode in the video (all lit up)
Ready mode is ready to drive mode right? I don't think you want to be in ready mode

Yeah, I think we're just tripping up on terminology. It seems like you're in On, but the car is behaving like you're in Accessory:

one push without brake: Accessory (basically for listening to the radio, no shifting allowed)
two pushes without brake: On (cabin ventilation will run if it's on, dash lit up, you can shift out of Park)
one push with brake: Ready (fully on, engine starts in a few seconds, usually)

That last one is what you do every time you use the car. Even then, the car won't let you shift out of Park (into any other gear) if you don't have the brake pedal depressed. It also won't let you shift out of Park if you're in "Accessory", regardless of brake pedal pressed or not.

Then I think I am in the On mode (two pushes without brake) dash is lit up

I asked Nutz about boltz to help me out since he is nearby
If I could watch someone do it successfully on my car that would help

Just for giggles, I gave it a try. Worked for me. It's a little hard to see, but the indicator jumps from P to N and back to P, and you can hear it too:

I pressed twice and put my foot on the brake and then shifted to N after first engaging the emergency brake and also with the energency brake unengaged.

I got inconsistent results .. both ways e brake on or off sometimes it would go in the N sometimes it would not
It could be my timing to slow to fast
At any rate I think I will try and easier method using the little jumper wire in the OBD terminal
    I hope that is easier

    Thanks man

Here is a method of bleeding the brakes without using invalid mode

Does anyone have any comments on this before I attempt it ?

    Thanks

Worthless. Presenter hasn't even pretended to be interested in learning what the steps are or why.

YouTube is a resource with a lot of good information but man it's hard to find.

You do have to hold the shifter at the Neutral position for a split second. E-brake on or off does not make any difference, for this operation. Yes it will, for the ultimate goal of getting into Invalid mode, to shift into to Neutral no.

Again, make car "on" (two pushes of start button, foot not on brake.
Set Parking brake (if it isn't already)
Press the foot brake (not the parking brake), and push shifter to Neutral, and hold it there a split second.

    What happens?

It goes into neutral but not consistently
Do you have any experience using the jumper in the OBD2?
    Thanks

The jumper lets you do two things:

    1. it lets you read trouble codes from most of the car's computers, by counting the blinks of the dash lights, if you are getting warnings and don't have a code scanner handy.
    2. It lets you clear some trouble codes, in case you have some and you know why and you fixed the problem and want the codes to go away. Brake codes, for example, can be cleared with 8 pedal strokes within 5 seconds, as you saw in the video (only I don't think the presenter got those in within 5 seconds, seemed to have never looked up the details).

    (1) is the most important use of it, though people talk about (2) all the time as though blindly clearing codes were some kind of good idea.

It doesn't do anything to activate the necessary valve sequences for bleeding. It does nothing for bleeding at all. It is for reading codes and clearing them. Its one use for you would be if you managed to set some trouble codes during your bleeding attempt, it would let you clear them.

Something very simple must be tripping you up.

The car is "on" (two pushes of start button without foot on brake).

Foot on brake, push shift lever to N, and hold it there.

Car should shift to Neutral, in a second at most, reliably.

I could be doing something sightly wrong but I don.t know, or there could be something about my car that is not right

Seems the jumper method is a lot less complicated just not sure if it works

Maybe look on achieving Invalid Mode as a necessary hurdle. If you can't manage that, might be safest to shell out the C note and let the dealership do the deed. ;)

FWIW, I was near-flummoxed by not having parking brake set, last time around.

I have decided to have a highly recommended mechanic do the brake bleed

I am going to post this question separately here on Gen 3 maintenance and TS

How can I know if this mechanic (first time with him) does a good job?
Since I won't be there to watch
    Thanks

    Little video cameras are cheap.

Some TV news orgs have done exposés of quick-lube places where they go in and ask for the work to be done, and leave a car with little cameras hidden all over.
