How many miles do you have to drive your Prius to make up for the thousands of gallons of diesel fuel burned to transport your Prius to the Port in California and all of the emissions created by those diesel engines?

Looks as if 8 times less CO2 emissions per mile are expelled if vehicles are shipped by sea rather then by trucks. That means that for me to get a vehicle from Japan, I'm actually expending less CO2's then to get a car from the Big3 made in Michigan or Canada.....

First of all, GM or Ford would not ship a truck to Salt Lake City via just truck. GM or Ford would ship it by truck only about as far as toyota. The rest would be via rail. Good try.

So, taken literally, the author says that good gas mileage is an unfavorable act or quality,during times of high gas prices. Impeccable from the standpoint of subtle propaganda but questionable from the standpoint of technical accuracy. As was the rest of the article.

Also, unrelated, if diesel is $2.50/gallon, if it took thousands of gallons to ship a car, call it 3000, the shipping charge would have to be $7.5K just to cover the fuel. On a $23K car? Nonsense.

Even pickup trucks... I was helping my neighbor put some tube steps on his F-150, '03 or '04, I forget exactly which, but I was surprised how many "heche en Mexico" stamps I saw on various components underneath the truck. That aside, I'm kind of new here, and I was just curious, if someone doesn't seem to like Prius's or hybrids or even Toyotas, why would they hang out here and have over a thousand posts?

Those sales statistics sound warped.

I've seen statistics month to month in 2006 showing that Toyota Hybrids alone outsold any other car manufacturer, or came very close. If their hybrids alone did that, there's no way hybrids as a whole account for just 1% of sales.

I call false numbers.

For me, I don't care if the so called American automakers get it or not. I'm not buying one of their pieces of junk again. Quality and reliability are very BIG factors when I buy my vehicles. So, since I buy very reliable vehicles, I pollute less because I'm not having to buy all those replacement parts.

 

Malorn is actually arguing that we must restructure our society so that we don't need private single-occupant cars for most trips. And he's right.
