Official (OEM) Toyota Prius 2016 (Gen 4) oil-change instructions

    Edit 1: Search for 0W-20, replace with 0W-16.
    Edit 2: Search for 5W-20, replace with 0W-20.

    I'm not from Missouri, but I'm sceptical, lol. Specifically: that there anything other than the revised oil spec going on, that the engine blueprints have actually changed.

    There were some contradictions, somewhere. Likely due to incomplete edit. Can't find them at the moment.

    But be that as it may: yeah, that last question, in spades.

    Remember these are the guys that also say:

    "...the vast majority of vehicles will not experience this condition..." (regarding 3rd gen EGR clogging)

    I see the confusion. Inconsistency in the 2018 manual, which does not appear in the 2019 manual.

    I think so. Anyone here (priuschat) with over 100k miles that checks, finds a lot of carbon. @mjoo did some flow tests.

    I should ask at our dealership. I was just in there getting bulk 0W20. I'm betting they've yet to hear of 0W16.

    Edit: Ahh, TIL means "Today I Learned". I thought at first you meant 'till, lol.

    0W16 is also used in the current Corolla Hybrid in Europe.

    Since the search for this forum isn't so great, trying to search for something for a specific generation gives results for the entire forum...

    I just wanted to put on the interwebs that my 2018 Prius 3, manufactured October 2018 in Japan, (sold in Southern California) has the spin-on filter 90915-YZZF2.

    Apparently, word on those "match your part" sites (used by Amazon, AutoZone, etc.) IMG_20200201_101040659.jpg spin-ons were only compatible with November 2018 and beyond.

    I believe my 2011 and 2012 had a canaster. 2015 and 2016 had a spin on as well as my 2019.

    As far as oil is concerned, they probably did the 0W16 to get a few more MPGs on the Federal EPA test. 0W16 is too thin for hot climates in my opinion only and does not reflect the views of the management.

    Has anyone tried if the Fram Ultra XG3600 full-synthetic oil filter fits? It's a great filter, an industry leader in filtration efficiency, with extra filtration surface and capacity.

    Threads and holes are the same as in the Toyota OEM oil filter. However, it's longer and wider. It fit perfectly in my old Corolla.

    My son's 2015 Prius v and my 2017 Prius trim 2 are both canister type.I think the spin-ons started in 2018.

    Updated oil-change instructions for 2020 Prius Prime.

    Unlike what the official Toyota instructions say, I would never install a spin-on oil filter with a wrench. I only hand-tighten them to the specified 3/4 turns, which is sufficient. Spin-on oil filters are meant to be tightened by a specified number of turns, not by a specified torque. Installing a spin-on oil filter with a wrench and/or torquing it to a specified torque could lead to a removal nightmare in the next oil change. Therefore, simply hand-tighten it, preferably by using a shop towel or rag to protect your hand, to 3/4 turns or whatever number of turns is specified on it.

    @Gokhan 's posting looks to be valid for fourth gen Prius or Prime, shows both oil filter styles, though Toyota's language is absurdly stillted. Portrayal also is hopeless, they show no image of the spin-on, ton's on the permanent housing style (which they're no longer using).

    Note the 13 foot pound torque value, that's the spin-on torque. And/or 3/4 turn past first contact. Either method of tightening will do. And then the 18 foot pound value further down, that's the permanent housing spec.

    Yes, it is for 2020 Toyota Prius Prime, which is shown on the first page of the instructions.

    I also just noticed again that Toyota is indeed saying "tighten 3/4 turns by hand" in the alternative instructions, which is my recommendation for installing a spin-on oil filter—do not use a wrench for installing a spin-on oil filter. The problem with using a wrench is that even if you try to follow the 3/4-turns recommendation when using a wrench, it is very easy to overtighten it, which will make the subsequent removal very difficult. Therefore, tighten the spin-on oil filter 3/4 turns by hand, not with a wrench.

    I've converted my 3rd gen to spin-on, and at first install I put a silver sharpie mark at 6 o'clock (at first contact), then torqued to 13 foot pounds. And surprise surprise, the sharpie mark ended up around 3 o'clock (3/4 turn). :)

    The term "by hand" I wouldn't take literally, I get the sense a more accurate description would be "without torque wrench". I doubt I've got the grip and strength to do 3/4 turn by hand.

    Yes, it could be a little hard on the wrist if you insist to turn it by another millimeter after it stops turning, but there is no reason to apply a lot of force. If it is 2.8 ∕ 4 turns and doesn't go further, it is still OK. You can use a shop towel or rag for a better grip. In my experience the Toyota 90915-YZZF2 oil filter turned about 3/4 turns by hand easily and sometimes noticeably more. I've never had any problems with hand tightening, and when it came to removal, the oil filter was never too loose and always required a decent amount of pull on the wrench to remove it, which means even hand-tightening seats the spin-on oil filter very well.

    Curious why you converted to the spin-on. Isn't replacing just the filter element as opposed to a whole filter assembly (which I understand to be the spin-on) more environmentally friendly?
