have to echo everyone else in that, city driving will make or break your overall tank mileage. i do mostly city driving too. my new Prius only has 400 miles on it and im at 53.1 mpg. with my 2004, i would be at 60 mpg.

city driving for me is a two sided mirror. in the morning at 5:30 AM its a gentle uphill, elevation increase of about 150 feet, 5.5 miles. usually lose about .2-.4 mpg. home is heavy traffic at 5 PM downhill and can go from break even on tank to a gain of as much as ½ mpg. all depends on the lights. if no stops, its the upper end. a lot of stops, the lower... usually somewhere in between.

keep in mind, because of the slope, i can coast in drive for over 2 miles and actually be speeding slightly most of the way.

before i moved, i tracked my mileage all the time. 7.6 miles, very small change in elevation. mpgs in morning average temps 50-55º, low traffic volumes: 52-60 mpg. afternoon trip, 50% of route, heavy traffic, temps 70-80º: 56-72 mpg.

so you can see, the city mpg question needs to be asked with MUCH more information if you want a semi-accurate estimate.

I don't have a clue. My route is 10 miles one direction. 50% city/ 50% highway. I average 55mpg without AC. That puts my mileage right in the middle of the EPA estimates. The weather has cooled a little here and my current tank is over 60mpg combined. I know that won't last because my teenage son like to take his date and/or friends out in the Prius on the weekends.

BTW, It felt really, really good filling up this week. Cost my $20 to go three weeks. Yipee....as I was looking at one of those big 4X4 megacab trucks filling up next to me.

New Prius (just under 500 miles, almost one month old) and consider our driving 90% 'city'. Our 'official' first tank and we're getting 51MPG right now, not having done anything to the car (but, I might try the inflate the tire to 42/40 tip) yet.

We average maybe 10 - 12 miles daily on 2 - 3 completely separate trips. And, there are hills on the roads we drive. So, I'd consider our drives definitely high on 'short'.

But, have figured out the quick acceleration, feather touch to the gas, pump and glide technique, being more observant of light changes, coasting, etc. to offset the "4 - 5 minute start up loss" and think 50MPG is easily doable tank to tank.

Took the car on the highway for the first time today. Only had about 4 miles of highway (each way), but appeared I got around 52 MPG while driving 60MPH+ (i.e. not being a slow slug).

Bigger problem I see is fighting my spouse over who gets to drive it!

There are definite break in periods- ! saw improvements at 5000, 8000, and 10.000 miles.

there are many variables to city driving- if you have not too much traffic and clear roads . speeds under 40, fairly level, trips at least 10 minutes, you can cruise around 60-100 mpg! (the first 5 minutes will be low no matter what)

just have a blast what ever!

I have to agree with most of the member on their average mpg. Several conditions may be the factor, but after looking at all the review, it appears that 43 to 50 mpg area is the over all average. I am on the west coast and do not have too much driving resistance. Like anywhere else, in a large metropolitan area, (lots of cars/traffic/freeways) we still average 43 mpg. On a positive note, I was able to drive from San Francisco, CA to Tucson, AZ on: (hold on to your hats) 11 Gals of Gas. Yep not bad. Average speed was about 70mph. The even better part of this was: On my return trip, I had around 1100 lbs of weight in the back seat, trunk and passenger seat. Still the same mpg. This little auto has paid for its self. :)

I usually average just over 60 mpg in the city.

Here's an image of the Consumption screen from my current tank:

90% city (inner city not "urban") 10% Interstate, last tank 68.3MPG/784 miles. Tanks have been in mid-60's all summer. My Prius has over 30,000 miles with some well worn OEM tires at 50/48 PSI.

I'm getting 36.5 mpg in the city. I'm trying to figure out if this is a problem.
