Windshield replacement doesn't exist!

As I was driving to work today, I noticed a crack in my windshield starting all the way at the bottom and going up across my field of vision by the HUD. I have no idea what caused this; I've had the car for 3 months and don't remember anything hitting the windshield.

I called my dealer and he said he wasn't aware of any defects/recalls, and that windshields typically aren't covered under warranty. He said he'd call back with a quote, but to expect $1100 - $1300. He strongly advised against getting the replacement through Safelight, because of the cameras/sensors that need to be calibrated, and which he said sometimes don't work properly when the glass is different.

He then called me back 15 minutes later to say that Toyota DOESN'T YET SELL the windshields for the 2020 Prius, and that I will HAVE to get it fixed by a 3rd party!

I asked him to escalate this to management; I don't understand how Toyota can sell me a car and not have a way to repair it.

Has anyone encountered this before? I would greatly appreciate any advice.I've previously used Safelight to repair small nicks in my old 2006 Prius, but I've never needed to replace an entire windshield before, and I've also never had a car with this many sensors before.

Is 2020 Prius any different from earlier Gen4 Prius? There are many threads on this topic for earlier Gern4 (including PRIME) front windshield crack. I had mine replaced two weeks after buying 2017 PRIME 2.5 years ago. There was a shortage of OEM replacement glass at that time and no aftermarket glass available on market yet, but that has been solved recently.

I wouldn't worry about 3rd party glass! The brand I got was FUYAO and it matches perfect. I paid $322 out the door. My installer didn't get the lane departure alert correct, but I turned the system off and don't miss it. If you really need the cameras aligned, you can still take to Toyota to do it, I guess.

I thought the radar cruise also used the camera.

Not certain about RADAR Cruise - but the Pre-Collision uses the camera.

Yeah, dealers can say strange things to would be customers. I wonder if it’s just a prius thing… I brought mine into a dealer for new tires last week, and was told they don’t have the machine to mount touring tires on my vehicle. .??

OEM and aftermarket Windshields should both be available. Which Prius do you have? Your avatar still says 2006 Prius. Anyway, the windshield on my 2016 cracked a few years ago. the dealer charged $1300 for aftermarket windshield and sensor recalibration. I actually took the issue up with Toyota USA, And they offered $550 goodwill towards future parts and service. So next week I’m driving 75 miles out of my way to a dealer who can mount new tires on my Prius.

Safelite AutoGlass installed Fuyao, calibrated all the cameras, but forgot to install gel for the rain sensor, was installed on return visit for install, no problems. Hud is fine, Pre-Collision is fine, rain sensing is fine, windshield even seems a little stronger. Not a big Satellite fan, but windshield has been fine. Also, dealer is not the end all for all service work, they likely won't have glass in stock, won't have major parts in stock, or have tires in stock, and in all those cases will more than likely be much more expensive than stores that deal with tires and glass. Fuyao glass was just a little over $500 installed and calibrated. Radar is in the logo in front, so not even part of windshield sensors or cameras.

I don't notice any degradation of the cruise control with the new windshield. Not saying it hasn't happened, just that I don't notice it.

I'm not sure how critical a re-alignment is? The new windscreen could be so similar to the old one that it works fine. They possibly err on the side of caution?

If you get a windshield replaced by a glass dealer, they should have the equipment for calibration of the safety equipment, why, because insurance companies won't deal with them if they don't. My Fuyao windshield has a number on it that shows it is the correct windshield for HUD and rain sensing, checked by a Toyota dealership.

Your auto insurance should cover it w a very low or no deductible. Glass is not the same as your regular deductible

Forget stealerships. My buddy just got his windsheild replaced in his 2019, by Safelight, and hasn't had any problems. Better yet, his insurance covered it with zero deductible. Doesn't get any better than that :)

Insurance coverage is totally dependent on the insurance company, and the policy. Windshield coverage is extra, IIRC.

Also, using the term "stealership" is disparaging and insulting, and its use should be restricted or prohibited in a civil forum like this one. I don't believe there is a higher percentage of crooked dealerships than there are roofers, electricians, plumbers. We all probably know and socialize with people who work at them, and support this forum.

If we didn't support dealership service departments (only the better ones) there would be no dealerships at all, which would create obvious problems.

To properly support the service departments, buy coal rollers instead of hybrids.

Is it possible to correct the thread title? It is obviously incorrect.

Yes, I don't know of any policies where it's "free" here - USA might be different - I pay an extra $60 a year to get a full replacement at "no cost".

Sure. Well I have a good friend / ace mechanic, who worked in those places for years. He has been certified by both Toyota and GM, and he personally owns both. He has said many times how it used to bug the crap out of him that his bosses would have him perform services and repairs which were not needed (fix what wasn't broken). This is only one of the reasons he now works out a shop at his home. So great to be able to give him a holler, and bring him a vehicle almost any time. Then BS about the weather, the dogs, the women, whatever, while he takes care of business. Never a wait. Never have to leave him my car. So many times I've asked him, does this need to be replaced ? Only to have him tell me, well, your good for now... Or "hey I have a check engine light".... So he sees its coming from a sensor... cleans it with car cleaner and Bam ! I'm good ! No charge for the diagnosis, OR the fix !
His charge (with very low overhead) is typically "half" of a dealership.

I know not everybody "knows somebody personally" who is a great mechanic, who works at home. But if your car is really important to your livelihood (like mine is) and you don't have ridiculous amounts of $$$ to go to these places and keep them running, then I would put in some serious time and effort to find somebody... family, or friend, who can do your mechanical work, like my friend does for me.

And yes, the same goes for electricians, roofers, plumbers, etc.

PS, I think this is a post which could be extremely beneficial to folks who read it, and take it to heart.
