Tire replacement at 20K miles

    Yeah, not good to start two threads, essentially the same subject, or close enuf that there's no reason not to just have the one. Just frustrates responders, and keeps you running back and forth.

    So far it's mainly you posting, and one response from @dig4dirt, so no time like the present. I don't mind if my post is blown away, lol.

    For wet traction, Yokohama Avid Ascend GT is rated to be one of the best. It is also LRR tire and many good reviews. That said, I have not had this particular tire on my car yet. I have had older Yoko Avid Ascent which was a fantastic LRR tire on my HCH. But I don't how good it is on snow, for I had dedicated snow tires on my HCH during winter.

    There's way too many tire stores selling the wrong kind of tires for a Prius... Don't buy any of those options... Your MPG will be awful if you do. The amount of times you need snow tread in this part of the country is not often enough to justify how much extra money you'll spend in gas over the life of the tires.

    Stick with your low rolling resistance ecopias and change two at a time (or in some cases one) so as to maximize the amount of mileage you get off your old tires. It's incredibly wasteful to buy all four tires at the same time and have them installed right away. What I did is bought some Ecopias on https://www.simpletire.com/ which has the lowest price and free shipping and then whichever tire was the most worn out I'd pull of and put the spare on and take the wheel to alignment shop down the street and for $20 cash under the table they'd mount and balance a new tire. I saved a ton of money this way and my old Ecopia's were good for 75K miles.

    The weird thing for me right now, I'm getting better mpg with Michelin X-ICE (195/65R15), vs Michelin Primacy MXM4 (215/45R17). To compound matters, the X-Ice are on steel rims weighing around 16~18 pounds, and the Primacy's are on the 17" OEM porker rims, maybe 24 pounds.

    Those all sound like "premium" tires to me.
    Wait a few days and see who recommends what on here.
    Might want to contact a couple of other "tire shops" too.

    There are several threads about low rolling resistance tires on here already.

    How about not making snide comments like that and saving us all from reading completely worthless text ??
    Please.

    With a "mature" forum like this, a search for "tires" can return HUNDREDS of hits.
    Sorting through them can be kind of daunting.
    And anything more than 2 years old is probably worthless now anyway.

    Anyhow, human nature dictates that it ain't gonna happen.......so why are YOU even bothering to mention it ??

    Altimax RT43 cost less and have better tread, traction, temperature, and speed ratings than the GY Assurance or the BT Ecopias I ran previously.

    I did not notice any drop in the mileage from the LRR tires and love the improved traction in the rain.

    Thank you. I appreciate your support. I have read through the extensive threads (mainly with regards to winter tires as I've thought about getting a second set). However, when my local, trusted shop recommends particular brands I thought I might get a second opinion since it conflicts with the conventional PriusChat wisdom about what tire to get. Based on feedback so far, it sounds like what the auto shop recommended isn't the best choice for a Prius.

    I would check Discount Tire, and Tire Rack and just compare reviews and ratings.
    Many good resources for evaluating tires. Owner reviews, ratings, ability to compare tire X to tire Y.

    As a fellow Pacific Northwest driver, I would state the obvious and say wet weather traction should be a priority.

    It seems to me, all tires are different combinations of strengths, weaknesses and compromises. The good news, is information and reviews about tires are plentiful.

    I think the process is just to figure out what attributes you value the most in your tire, know that a "perfect" tire that is best at everything doesn't exist, and then with just a little research you can narrow down what choices best match your valued attributes.
