I found a thread with information on adding a nav/BT system to a non-nav 2011, but the threads were all from 2011 so I figured I would post with a more recent query.

I just bought a 2010 Prius II, used (of course), with no factory-installed NAV. It has the "regular" radio w/out the NAV screen, no BT, and no back-up camera. I'm interested in whether I can install an OEM 2010 NAV/BT/RADIO system from another vehicle in mine without having to upgrade everything in the car (IE: installing a new door/door wiring harness, new steering wheel with the bluetooth controls, etc.).

I don't really need the BT controls on my steering wheel, and I saw in another thread that there may be a possibility of having them installed in the blank space beneath the Power button instead. That would be perfectly fine with me! I also appear to already have a mic in the space between the overhead passenger/driver lights.

    To summarize:

    1. If I purchased a non-NAV Prius II, can I install the NAV/Radio/Bluetooth head unit in my car?
    2. If the answer to #1 is YES, is it possible to also install an aftermarket or OEM Backup camera in the car?
    3. If the answer to #1 is NO, what are some of y'all's recommended after-market BT systems that are inexpensive and easy installation?

I know it's a longshot and will probably be expensive, but it's less money than buying a brand new car with everything installed...

I appreciate any insight y'all can share!

Personally, I would just install an aftermarket headunit that does everything you want. Most factory nav systems aren't that great.

I've heard that, and it's an option if it will work with the car. The main thing I'm concerned about is the ability to install the nav system head unit in the 2010 without having to install a crazy amount of new wiring.

Do you have any suggestions for, if it can be installed, an aftermarket headunit that would work with the system?

Update: One thing I've found from looking on eBay for aftermarket head units, and from searching other threads on Prius Chat, is that if I have a 2010 Prius II base model (which I do, lucky me), then I can pretty much replace anything I want within it and "pimp my prius" as long as the components are compatible with the existing wiring. I do not have the JBL sound system to my immediate knowledge, which seems to be the biggest problem I've come across, but I will make sure of that this afternoon when I get back in the car.

I'm still interested in whether I can do this with the base model, and I'm certainly interested in y'all's thoughts on whether a factory or aftermarket would be preferable, and where to find said head units for the best (under $900) price.

Do yourself a favor and save your money unless your into looks only! Find a good cell phone mount for your cell phone and download a good NAV app. (Your phone always goes with you)

Plus, nobody will try and break into your car to steal your NAV/radio system because yours is just a basic radio.

Thank you, I appreciate the concern for my and my car's safety, but I would still like to explore whether this can be done and what options are out there for installing a new head unit.

I second the motion to skip nav in the radio and use your phone or a dedicated GPS like a Garmin. Bluetooth and aux in are the main features I look for. Even if you want a touchscreen, it shouldn't run you more than $300-400. About another $100 for the wiring, install kit, and whatever you need to maintain steering wheel controls. I would use Crutchfield to do your research, then search for that model elsewhere if you don't want to buy from them.

OK so, even though not directly answered, it sounds like the consensus is that Yes, I can replace the head unit in my Prius II with an aftermarket or factory Nav system with radio and bluetooth, with aftermarket highly recommended.

I did a little looking on Crutchfield's audio site, and there are definitely some interesting models that are on the list. I do not have steering wheel controls so that's not a big issue. I am more interested in something that will match the dash as well, look more uniform and clean, and decrease the likelihood that someone sees an aftermarket stereo/touchscreen and decides my car needs to go for an unsanctioned ride.

I found several options on eBay for under $300, and presumably, if I'm not feeling particularly handy on the installation day, I can take these to my local dealer/mechanic and have them install the aftermarket items, correct?

Edit: also - several of the options I've seen have the capabilities of connecting a back-up camera. I do not currently have such a camera installed on the Prius. I assume this would require additional wiring through the car. Does anyone have experience with adding a backup camera after the fact to their Prius, and what did it entail? I would like to add the camera if I go through with this project - whole hog, so to speak.

I would look for a car audio shop to install aftermarket parts, but the dealer might be ok with installing factory parts.

Got it - I'll start looking around for an audio shop nearby that would be willing to do the install, depending on what I get (and when - it's low on the budget list right now but it's nice to dream and plan about upgrading the car).

So on to the backup camera; I did a little looking on my car last night, and it appears there might be a section where the camera would be mounted anyways, it just wasn't for this particular base model. I am not entirely sure about this, as I just looked at the hatch when I opened it yesterday evening, but it appears that there's a space to the left of the left-most license plate light (if facing the back of the car) that would fit a camera and is designed to take one.

If there is such a space, does that mean that there may already be a wiring connection within the car, or is it more likely that I will need to wire the car completely for the camera?

Additionally, I also checked and it looks like the car is Satellite Radio ready - the antenna is a satellite version, and the radio has an AM/SAT button so it appears the wiring is correct. Does this mean that I can get a new headunit with the satellite option already built in and it should work plug-n-play with the car's current wiring?

There are aftermarket radios with nav that will fit into the OEM location and look close to OEM. I'd recommend going that route rather than trying to get an OEM nav unit. I have the OEM one in my 2010 and its really not that great to go through the trouble of adding it in. Plus its designed for the JBL sound system so you'll need to probably add that with the controller under the passenger seat. Overall, Its more trouble than its worth considering there are alternatives with android auto or garmin built into the aftermarket units.

I use something like this. But I'm not into fancy stuff just practical and works and at a cheap price.

Hey man! ignore the comments above to sway you from doing what you want to make the car more comfortable to you. With that said... I to am in the same boat. my 2010 III is in need of an entertainment / gadget update. I was looking at the direct fit options. similar to the Pumpkin head unit with android OS on it.

I didn't order it yet because the biggest complaint is the screen resolution. While the resolution is much higher than the factory unit it seems not as good as some of the others on the market. What draws me to this solution is the direct fit to the prius with the steering controls and self install kit. (I don't want someone else doing something I can do myself.) there are obd2 / bluetooth / usb / external monitor connection options on these types of units and it looks factory.

I'm in the same boat. 2010 prius, base model, looking for an aftermarket head unit with bluetooth for handsfree calling and integrated music. Wife doesn't answer calls while driving because she'd have to take the phone out of her purse. Would prefer push button on radio to answer. She doesn't call out while driving. Also since she listens to the radio, I'd prefer that she doesn't have to switch between channels to answer a call. A BT ready radio would pause the radio and allow the call to go through. A decent NAV would be good but not a deal breaker. I prefer google maps for updated traffic routing. Been looking at some Win CE 8 ($100-200 range) head units and most reviews are mixed on the NAVs. I like the clean look of the touchscreen models vs the non-touch with all the buttons and knobs.

Did you guys decide on one yet?

I've seen some units on amazon that has wireless cameras with the aftermarket touchscreen units. again, mixed reviews. I'm an IT tech and I am skeptical of the reliability of anything wireless compared to their wired counterpart. If you are creative and can do some searching for paths to run the wires, I'd go with a wired camera vs a wireless camera.

Hi Chuck12 and Double-i! I didn't see any of the other responses on this thread, I am so sorry - for some reason it hasn't been sending me updates.

I have not yet found a head unit that I like, but I'm constantly on eBay looking at what's available for my Prius. For grins and giggles, I also decided to check out local salvage yards for entities that are parting out Priuses, just in case someone has a nav system they want to get rid of cheap, and I keep finding the same thing; the aftermarkets are noticeably better, cheaper, and they have many more options for customization and use of apps and whatnot. I am sold on using an aftermarket head unit rather than an OEM!

Here are some of the ones that I've found on eBay and Amazon if y'all want to compare them:

    >> currently out of stock on amazon, but has some nice features.

For Toyota Prius 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 Car Stereo GPS Navigation DVD Player | eBay

Hot Sale Car DVD Palyer for Toyota Prius 2009 2010 2011 2012 DVD Radio GPS | eBay

For OEM, this is the ONLY eBay auction I've seen where the starting price is less than $500, and it has a few days left:

Toyota Prius Radio CD Navigation GPS BLUETOOTH86120 47390 Denso 2010 Model | eBay >>> Yes, I know OEM is discouraged; believe me I'm going the aftermarket route if I can get the $$$$ together. My thought on still looking at OEM is that my local dealership is more likely to install it and I *know* it will work with my existing system.

    Jessica's eBay Note:

The only issue I have with the following eBay aftermarket systems is that they ship from overseas and I'm not 100% convinced they'll work with my car. That may just be my own personal hesitancy, and they're certainly advertised to fit the 2010 Prius II left-hand-drive, but I'm still slightly wary. With that said, eBay has the best prices and variety for aftermarket head units/nav systems that I've been able to find.

So in summary, I'm still looking and haven't found one for under $400 that I really like and trust yet. I'll add more here as I find them.

Thanks. Based on the comments about oem, I'm going to go aftermarket. I'm all for functionality over sleek looks.

There's a local Fry's electronics and best buy that I will go check out what they have.

If you do decide on one, keep us posted and I will do the same.

Curious what you ended up doing. I just bought a 2010 Prius used that I want to upgrade the radio with backup camera on.

    adding my 2c...
been looking to upgrade my 2011 Prius "Two" head unit and been looking at the OEM ones, androids and what not.
feel free to correct me if im wrong as its only been a couple of weeks of looking so far.

    Found the following:
86140 47050 that has rear camera capability. am fm cd mp3
86140-47060 "57032" that has the Entune App capability. am fm cd Nav mp3 apps xm HDradio
86140-47180 that has same as above but is for JBL system (canbus)
the after market androids that looks OEM
the branded double din systems (pioneer, kenwood etc)
the Made in China Double/Single din systems

my main usage really is Radio, Hybrid Assistant/Torque, rear camera.
nav is secondary as phones can be used but if its there...

so in my case i think what fits the bill is the aftermarket android.
the ones that look like OEM are questionable at best.
branded aftermarket wont allow the app i want.
so after 2 wks. i think im going to settle for the atoto "brand" thats on the "jungle" marketplace "A..." seems like its well received.
if i didnt need the app. i probably would have gone 86140-47060 or a pioneer.
need to R&R the engine first (but oh so many projects in the way!) so i'll update when i get around installing and using this.

    good luck to us.

Found this thread, I know it's been dormant for a while. I just bought a 2010 III. It has BT for the phone, but the simple radio/CD player. No NAV, but it looks like a PO retrofitted a replacement hatch and tried to cover up the camera mounting hole.

It looks like at least the head unit and control module would be needed, and may be feasible provided the wiring harness from the dash to the back is installed in all cars even w/o the option because it's simpler with fewer unique parts.
