So weird what has happened, and I’m trying to figure out but I need help. Wife was driving our 2008 Prius, she said everything was normal, then, while driving, dash lights disappeared and crt screen disappeared, she stops at a red light, engine shut off and car went into park. She was stuck in the middle of the freeway and that is so dangerous that Toyota would design a car you can’t take out of park in an emergency. We finally got the car towed home, I been trouble shooting it ever since. 12v battery is at 12.4, car has the smart key system, sit in drive seat and press the power button, nothing!!! But, like said, battery is only year old and has 12.4 volts, and anyways, a bad battery wouldn’t cause it to mess up going down the road, when put the key in the slot it beeps, doors unlock and lock as usual, so weird!!! Please help!!!

    Welcome to PriusChat!!

How many miles are on the vehicle?
There are fuses under the dash and under the hood, which fuses have you checked already? (did you check AM2 ?)

Which OBD2 codes were retrieved when you scanned the vehicle with a hybrid compatible OBD2 scanner?

When was the last time the Inverter coolant pump was replaced, check if the service is listed at http://toyota.com/owners

12.4 is low for a one year old battery

    Put a charge on it

You have red lights on your freeways?

You probably have a shorted inverter pump. When the pump gets shorted, the AM2 fuse in the engine compartment will blow. That will make you lose all the lights on your dash and your car will not start again.

If you haven't done the recall on the inverter pump, Toyota will do this for free. If you have done the recall, you would then need to replace the pump and replace the AM2 fuse.

What kind of 12v battery do you have? Is it an Optima?

When I get home from work I’m going to check that am2 fuse, I bought the battery from Toyota

I replaced the inverted water pump about 4 months ago, with an amazon unit, I did notice for a while it was kinda loud

THANK YOU!!!! THANK YOU!!!! THANK YOU!!!!

it was the Am2 fuse that blowed, that cheap inverter pump from amazon must have failed... I will put an oem one on it, I’m sure Toyota won’t do it because it’s so old and has 197000 miles on it.

It's in the area of the engine compartment, where you would jump start your car. It should be labeled AM2 on the underside of the cover, easy to find.

here.....the one wire plug in the upper left corner will disconnect the inverter cooling water pump. If the pump failed and you just replace the fuse, it will most likely blow again. You can drive without the ICWP, but just keep it within reason. If you start getting a high temp, the car will throw a red triangle. Replace the pump asap and then reconnect the plug.

Open the fuse box under the hood, you will see 4 fuses off to the side, second one down and is a 15 amp
