…you might want to check the bearing of the water-pump while you're about it. I got the dealer to give me the pump they replaced for me to mount on my TrophyWall in the garage. The serpentine belt had shredded with the various bits scattered all over I-495 and I-93. In fact the belt had been replaced 3 years ago, and after a service last year, the dealer had mentioned that they thought the water-pump might be leaking, but I couldn't see anything obvious so I decided to ignore their warning and thought perhaps they might have had a boat-payment due, or some such story! (…more fool me!) …so take heed of what your car is trying to telling you! Listen! Good luck!

Nearest Costco is an hour away. Friend of a friend is a doctor of audiology at an ENT office just down the road from us. I think she cut us a deal. Wife is super happy with the results and that's the main thing.

WilDavis, thanks for sharing your story AND warning! I will be observing very carefully from now on the coolant level. If it starts off as a slow leak that should be perceptible even if one is hard of hearing....

    moto g(7) power ?

I am about 2 hours away from 3 Costcos. Their own brand are basically year old models of a major brand at half the price and free checks & adjustments You can choose a different Costco for services too.

maybe they are out of your price range, but a high end brand might work better. my phonak's were $5,600.

and now that i'm on medicare, the next pair will be $3,600. or less.

The hearing professional makes all the difference and we seem to have a dearth available. I have had Phonaks and other similar brand name aids in the past. They seem to be OK for 2 or 3 years, similar to the Costco brand but Costco is half the price. My health insurance does not cover hearing aids.

Sorry to hear about the ordeal. But 5 hours to replace the water pump?!!! I have not replaced on on this car, but I have done so in many other cars. It has never ever taken more than an hour. This one looks relatively easy, too. Access is good, only one belt to deal with (had three belts on a 1993 Volvo). I think they took advantage of you, but you were probably aware of it. Sometimes it's easier to just have it done than pinch the pennies, but the level of rip off is a bit staggering. This is an easy 1 hour or less job for a professional in a professional environment (tools, expertise, etc.). That is a shame, really.

    Glad you are back, though!

…and talking of norty water-pumps: I asked the dealership to give me all the bits they replaced, and obviously the coolant & belt were somewhere out on I-495 & I-93, but here is the old water-pump (…impeller only just turnable by hand, bearing obviously shot)
    water-pump1.jpg

…I'm wondering if what looks like a plug-like thingy visible in the casing (see 2nd pic) might be a safety-plug which melts when the bearing gets too hot thus draining the coolant and causing overheating rather than disintegrating and doing even more damage? (…just an idea?)

ChuggyPig driving like a dream, and all seems to be well. :);)

I appreciate your concern and your kind words, but I'll refer you to my post #40 (up-thread) ;)

BTW they not only changed the faulty water-pump but they "bled the system and ran the engine for over 20 mins and circulated to hot tank to bleed out the air out, and brought engine temp up to 205 degrees, fan came on normally, shut engine off for 20 mins to check for head-gasket leakage into cylinders, engine started up normally, no misfires, or any other coolant leakage at this time". Sure I daresay I could have done exactly the same thing, but again I'll refer you back to post #40 ;)

i have only had these for 6 months, so i can't vouch for longevity. they told me 5-6 years, but that may not be the case.
my health insurance doesn't pay either, nor does medicare. for some reason, a group buy consortium has made a deal with medicare, and most audiologists have bought in. how they can sell $5,600. aids for $3,600. just goes to show the profit margin.
also, it is possible that my hearing loss is not as acute as yours.

I have been wearing hearing aids for about 20 years. My $1500 Costco aids are likely as good as your $3000 ones. Costco people are not paid on a commission basis so they are not hard sellers.

my father had costco's, they didn't help at all. i was pleasantly surprised how well these phonak's worked, albeit, not like natural hearing.

i got mine from mass eye and ear hospital, no commision, but plenty of profit.

I was going to ask you about the Medicare thing since they don't care about us being deaf and the resulting mental decline. My wife only needed one and it was a little over $2,000, which I didn't think was crazy expensive given the features it has. (Like when I see her walking around the house talking to someone on the phone without carrying the phone.)

Amen! I made the decision over 45 years ago that I would consider her happiness essential to my own. It's worked pretty well so far. We're still "in love," but that's mostly because she's so amazing.

We digress here, but at least we're helping make a nice long thread. :ROFLMAO:

…and they also flushed/changed the inverter and checked for any damage too (just checked the receipt). I agree with @VFerdman , nearly $1k seems rather much, but as I said earlier, there's no way I could have done the repair in a timely manner by myself, and having a reliable set of wheels is essential for my way of life, so it is what it is! :(;):)

Hard to argue with that! :) What's not worth $500 to one person may very well be worth a grand to another person.

I just hope the vehicle is restored to good health.
This is a poster that participates actively within Prius Chat, and seems to have a strong connection with their vehicle.
Therefore I wish the best to both of them.

One of my sons sometimes says "don't be that guy". One example, is whenever you mention something you purchased, they could have got it for half that price. Always.

    Come to think of it...
