I have just bought a 2017 Prius C, here in Australia, in case that makes any difference to my question.

The dealer told me repeatedly that replacing the stock head unit with a third party unit was fine, and that the car info display (fuel economy etc) on the upper dash would be fine.

I went to my usual car audio dealer to check what models are available etc and they flat out said that I would lose the upper display altogether if I replace the head unit. "You won't have data" is what he said.

Who's telling the truth? The dealership will fit a replacement head unit for me for about $2500 which seems waaay excessive to me.

Yeah, no problem. Replaced the factory NAV stereo in our ‘12 Pc4 with a pioneer unit. Also installed the Maestro module crutchfield recommends to keep the steering wheel control, etc. Top screen isn’t affected at all.
