Featured GM announces many new EV's

    10 new models coming with the earliest starting this year (Bolt refresh thats finally getting ACC).

    GM reveals 10 new production EVs all at once, with range up to 400 miles - Electrek

    But the biggest news to me is this battery design philosophy:

    The centerpiece of the presentation was the company’s new battery system, dubbed “Ultium,” which will power GM EVs starting next year.

    The battery system is focused on modularity, allowing different types of cells and chemistries to be used in packs ranging in size from 50 to 200 kWh, enabling “up to 400 miles of range or more.” The company committed to producing cells, in cooperation with LG Chem, that reduce the use of cobalt by 70%, thereby bringing down costs.

    Each module will have a dedicated battery-management-system, a move that will allow an individual module to be replaced with a new one, and even to mix and match different chemistries within a pack. The BMS for a module will store a full set of data that can be accessed at the end of its life, facilitating the recycling and re-use of the cells.

    Andy Oury, a lead engineer for batteries, said, “Ultium is going to help us break through the $100 per kilowatt-hour cost curve.”

    Looks like the roots of early development, that gave them so much data and feedback, is bearing fruit.

    It is all hype until it is on the road and proven over thousands of cars and thousands of miles.

    Still a move in the right direction.

    Better hope for a long warranty on the battery cause this seems like a plan for early battery failure.

    A modular battery like it seems to note means you do not need to match cells. That would be awesome rather than playing the cell matching or balancing game....

    The VW BEV platform was designed to use different type of cells, and Model #'s in China are using different cells.
    GM's system is dropping pack level battery monitoring and management, and going with stack level to allow the mixing of different types within the same pack.

    This is so cool. I'm envisioning future Mad Max movies where the scroungers will be digging through refuse, old electronics, etc., looking for any kind of rechargeable battery to wire into their still running, cobbled together jalopies. :D

    Each stack/module has a management circuit telling the charge system its cell's requirements. There isn't different cell types under the module level.

    In addition to making the use of different cells easier, GM's system should make repairs easier, as a replaced module doesn't need to be balanced against the rest of the pack, which can take days with a large pack.

    Just finished my review:
    • Nickel Cobalt Managenese Aluminum (NCMA) vs Tesla Nickel Cobalt Aluminum (NCA) - we'll need samples for testing. Tesla 2170 cells are readily available
    • wide coating of electrodes - they claim economies of scale, once the battery plant comes online but the larger the cell, the greater the risk of spoiling the whole with one defect
    • smallest number of the largest cells - which means one cell failure leads to a bricked car. Those of us with Prius experience know how a single cell failure leads to cascading set of problems and a bricked car in 3-6 months
    • 100 Ah cell - @3.7 V, 3,700 Wh per cell, putting all your eggs in one basket
    • 20 layers per cell - one bad roller and a lot of scrap
    • flat bottom (long edge) connected to cold-plate - this suggests there will be a significant thermal gradient which means a mechanical strain between the cold plate and far edge. In our Model 3, the cells are warmed to ~50 C for charging but cooled to ~30 C for operation. The Tesla thermal gradient is from the rim to the core which significantly reduces the thermal, mechanical strain.
    • zeolite - an ion holding material whose role is not explained
    • Bolt EV battery comparison - 25% weight reduction, 50% fewer connections, a GOOD THING
    • vertical integration - a GOOD THING, GM is not outsourcing the critical technology
    What was omitted:
    • Corvette EV - a Tesla roadster, Taycan, or Mach-E competitor
    So here are a couple of images:

    Here are three GM different pack configurations showing GM's approach. Notice the inconsistent "modules" from the three pack configurations. But this is what 'raise my eyebrows':

    They have a center 'tunnel' of battery cells, not their 'module', to replicate the legacy drive shafts that screwed up cars since forever. DUMB!

    A reporter/editor from Electrek, a Bolt owner, attended and verified from multiple sources that they are sticking with a 50 kW maximum DC charge rate. Owning a 50 kW maximum, BMW i3-REx, it means they are doomed to roll around urban areas. To go cross country, you need a minimum of 100 kW or the charge time makes highway travel impossible.
