As the title says, ever since I've had my Prius I've noticed a tapping noise coming from the engine. I did an Oil & filter change but that hasn't seemed to change anything. It seems to go away or at least decrease in severity when I've been driving for a little while. Unsure if outside temperature seems to correlate with how long the noise lasts. I used 10W-40 Oil (it's what the prior owners used, presumably to stop it losing oil at its high mileage) The noise doesn't seem to happen if I'm just sitting with the engine running, only when it's moving the car. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Was it ever run low on oil?

Wouldn't know, the previous owners never mentioned anything about it being low on oil. It doesn't seem to be losing any oil for me. It has been about 3000km since I changed the oil and it's still in the same spot on the dipstick.

I listened today and it definitely stopped after 5-10 minutes and sounded perfect, it wasn't like a separate tapping noise but the engine sounded 'harsher' if that makes sense. I'll try to record it tomorrow morning as I know my description isn't great.

    Does Gen2 retard/advance the timing like "c" and Gen3?

That might be what you are hearing

Definitely temperature dependent, starting the car at 9c gave me heaps of the noise whereas at 23c it sounded fine straight away. Couldn't record the noise due to this haha. Next cold morning I'll have to remember to record it.

I do have a rattly heat shield from where I scraped on my driveway the first day of owning the car (I now kick out passengers prior to entering my driveway) so could be related, though the noise that makes is very distinctive and only happens at certain rpm regardless of temperature.
