So my prius is making weird noise(loose heatshield) when i am giving gas in low speed (0-30 mph). I checked the oil dipstick today and found this plastic shavings on dipstick by max oil level indicator. This is 2016 engine modified to fit in 2010 prius. I am running amsoil with mobil1 oil. What could it be? I checked heatshield under the car and its not loose.

At least it floats. Could it be some gasket material from the oil cap? Maybe from the top of the dipstick cap, but don't quote me on that. Excess sealer from a head-gasket installation? Your oil filter should catch that debris, but see what comes out in the next oil change.

It was fully assembled engine from a salvage car with 16,000 miles so no head gasket installation was performed. I am changing oil tomorrow so lets see what i can find.

You could drop the oil pan and see what's in there if you get more of it in the oil from the oil change.

If i drop the oil pan, would i have to prime the oil pump? I read somewhere on other thread that if you take out the pan you have to prime the oil pump. I think it was @Ragingfit that mentioned it.

I would think It's not any different than changing the oil...the oil pump would need priming every time you change the oil if that were the case?

I would just change the oil and see how that goes first. "Dropping the oil pan" is not trivial. It is installed with special form-in-place gasket, will not come off without a fight...

I did say "if you get more (plastic) in the drained oil...then you "could" drop the oil pan and see what's in there. .I wasn't implying to do it first.

Just finished filtering oil and didnt find much in it. I dont see any plastic shavings and i am hoping the noise that was coming was the rusted exhaust shield. I added the washer and made it snug so it should last quite some time. So i am hoping that was the problem so i can sleep better instead of googling half of the night

You can drop the oil pan without fear of losing the oil pump prime.
Do not empty the oil from pump if you remove the pump.
Do not turn the engine backward.
    - Fix That Prius !!!

Particles that big would probably not pass the oil pump screen and wouldn’t be captured by the oil filter. This would indicate that the foreign material my have been introduced into the oil pan from an outside contamination source, i.e. through the oil fill cap. At this point it would be prudent to cut open the oil filter and inspect the media for any materials, anyway. If the filter media is clean, then I would say that you are good to go.

The piston skirts have a resin (plastic) coating of some sort. I've never seen it in person.

I drained the oil and changed the filter with genuine toyota filter. I used the same oil because it was amsoil and i only had 8000 miles on it. So just filtered out the old oil and nothing was found in oil or inside the filter.
