To be fair, the nav system has one advantage over most phone-based nav apps, which is that the nav system doesn't require connectivity to update the map display or recalculate routes. Depending on where you drive, that may not be a big deal to you, but few things are more frustrating than to need a refresh only to find you are unable to get one due to lack of a cell signal.

There are phone apps that have complete map sets in them -- TomTom GO comes to mind. Of course, they need a cell signal for traffic updates, but that's a more minor issue to me. That app also requires a subscription to do navigation and traffic. I don't know of any phone apps that include the map data, routing and traffic for free.

Consider, too, that "if the product is free, you are the product." The business model of those free apps is to collect data from you and sell it to third parties. If that doesn't bother you, fine. (It doesn't bother me all that much.) If it does, though, a built-in nav system or standalone GPS nav may be a better option.

With that context, and considering how much it costs to own and operate a car annually, is $200 every couple of years really that terrible? Sure, it could be less.

Personally, I put my destination into both the nav system and Waze, using Waze primarily but the nav system as backup.

Maps.me (MAPS.ME (MapsWithMe), detailed offline maps of the world for iPhone, iPad, Android) is my go-to when I'm going to Africa or some such place -- even some places here in the States. Unlike Google, it's open source. Of course it won't give you traffic info, but when you're driving in places where you don't have any cell service, traffic is probably not a big concern unless you count elephants or bison on the road as "traffic." :D

Also: 'Here we go' HERE WeGo – City Navigation - Apps on Google Play

Once Nokia owned, now owned by some German car companies, but still free and you can download whole countries. I'd rate maps.me higher for walking but Here we go higher for car navigation.

I agree about WAZE. It is great and works well with Apple CarPlay. We were traveling last week when WAZE directed us off the highway to avoid a traffic mess that could have held us up for 30-40 minutes.

What @Salamander_King said. ;) Ad blockers have their benefits, but they aren't smart enough to know which "ads" you'd like to see.

Sorry, forgot about the AB thing.
But I won't be turning it off any time soon.
In addition to eliminating a HUGE annoyance, there is also an inherent danger with "pass through" ads from 3rd party sites.

That site only applies to Garmin devices, not the Toyota navigation system. In theory it might be possible to copy the updated map data between SD cards, but I'm not sure that anyone has tested it, and it probably wouldn't be legal. Not sure of the extent that the Toyota infotainment system checks the microSD card data, but I suspect that at a minimum it checks for a Toyota branded microSD card so you can't just use any other brand of microSD. The data files on the microSD can be accessed with a computer, but I'm hesitant to do any further experimentation that could risk breaking the expensive infotainment system in the car.

In-car Nav system is a racket, IMHO. If I have a choice, I will never pay extra for trims that have a built-in nav system. Our Nissan Pathfinder SUV purchased used came with a nav system but still has 2014 map data, and it is now mostly unusable without paying $200 to update the map data to the latest which stopped at the 2017 version. Yes, they no longer make any update for the nav map data after only 3 years of service.

Stand-alone Garmin NAV works far better and far more economical. The top of the line unit costs less than $200 and comes with free life-time map updates.

My latest Ford does ALL of it's software updates VIA WiFi.

I have been hoping that will mean that the map updates will be WAY cheaper or free.
No new version available yet though.

AND.......the underlying GPS software is CRAP. One stop forward, two back.
    SIGH.

Has anyone been able to get part number 86271GN8PR20? This is the 2020 version of the maps for the Prius Prime 11.5 inch screen. I had one on order from Checkered Flag Toyota Parts but received an email stating that the part was back-ordered and they have not released the part, so a refund was issued. I then found the part for a $30 lower price at priority Toyota, but it's been two weeks and the part has still not been shipped from the warehouse.
