I have a gen 2 with a rebuilt title, the drivers side curtain went off in a crash. When I bought it the light was on, with an open circuit code displayed. I was able to pull back the headliner, and see that the new side airbag was unplugged.... I plugged it back in, and verified with tech stream that the code was not active. I cleared it from the history and no codes show up on techstream now. The light is still on, and when I use the OBD2 pin method, the srs light just blinks with no pattern, and not clearing.

I assume this means I need to replace the SRS ecu in the car. How difficult is it to remove the trim to get to it? Does anyone have any pictures or a description of how to remove it without damaging the cars trim?

Is it in the same spot as this gen 3?

The 2G SRS ECU is located behind the instrument panel finish panel lower center. When you remove that you will see an air duct. The ECU can be accessed once the air duct is removed.

Your car appears to have a real problem with the SRS system. If no DTC are logged it is possible that one problem is with communications between the various ECUs, thus preventing the DTC to be seen by Toyota Techstream.

My experience with srs modules is once they deploy an airbag they must be replaced or reset (not an option via tech stream)
however this service is available on eBay see link:

Thanks for the help guys. I was able to find a pdf with pictures of removing the lower center trim. There is a clip you need to pull out right of the power adapter, and the trim pulls out after that with two clips on each side that can be preserved. I then had to pull down some of the carpet, I was able to slip it off two other clips on each side without removing them. I then had to pull out the AC vent and move it side to side to remove the 3 bolts from the computer. I then had to push down on the white plastic tab on the cable, while flipping it open like a lever. I did also unplug the battery for all of this.

I took the ecu to a shop to get it reset for $50, which did fix my issue and my light is now off! I probably could have bought a new one for about that price but I didn't want to wait for the mail. To put it back together I did all this stuff in reverse order. I had to use a butter knife to get the ac vent back on which was tricky, probably would have been easier with trim tools.

Also to confirm, I had a side airbag unplugged, which gave me a code in techstream. I fixed it, cleared the code from history with techstream, but the light was still on with no code. Resetting the srs computer was the only way to clear it after no codes were shown.
