Berryman B-12 is essentially (primarily) acetone and toluene, so acetone should be relatively good as a piston soak, fuel injector cleaner, or oil change flush.

Would be nice to have link to your original thread. You seem to be one of the few people that have had success with the oil problem.

Plus any time I have ever pulled a head off a car, carb cleaner and a wooden stick always cleaned the piston top.

    Would this be the one?
    https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/MCR6402

Your original instructions said you used 2 oz per cylinder (that's 8 oz. total). Is there a substitute that might come in a smaller size?

Also, did you add the carb cleaner to the 4 oz. lacquer thinner that was already there from the previous day?

    Thanks much!

On amsoil.com it categorically states that adding ATF to engine oil will reduce the cleaning power of the oil. This appears to be an old trick that might not be valid with modern engine oil formulations.

    Update @Aztechmaster ?

I crossed 240k miles and have been burning steadily worse since about 180k. Still haven't done your recipe but getting close...

I did re-word your instructions into 10 steps and create this link which I may send to mechanic and drop off my car:

    tinyurl.com/pistonsoak

When I told him about this over a year ago and again recently he said all that does is swell up the rings and eventually will blow motor. But everyone has their opinion I said that's what we want is to swell up the rings lol.

Your not going to swell up metal piston rings. Maybe valve guide seals. I ran an ocr reader on your pic:

Gen 2 Prius Piston Soak: 10 Steps to Fix Oil Burning
    1. Remove spark plugs
    2. Pour 4 ounces of paint thinner in each cylinder soak 24 hours
    3. Pour additional 2 ounces carb cleaner in each cylinder soak 24 more hours
    4. Suck out fluid with shop vac....blow out with compressed air
    5. Install new plugs and PCV valve
    6. Turn on car with temp to max hot and let run 5 minutes (lots of smoke will come from exhaust).
    7. Drain oil and filter.
    8. Install new oil filter, fill engine with ATF
    9. Let run additional 10 minutes
    10. Drain ATF and install new oil filter and 5w30.

"paint thinner" can mean different things to different people. I think the results could swing a lot on the interpretation of this ingredient. Be specific.

Personally I'd want acetone, which some people do use to thin certain paints, for this role.

I can't read or post amazon links for whatever reason, so I can't see what you've put up.

If you search amazon for 'B007VTRQ00' you should hit the blue can of Kleen Strip Acetone that I would use for this.

And you only need a pint for this project. You will find smaller quantities packaged as nail polish remover, but it may not be pure acetone and the price per unit will be higher so read carefully.

Well that's exactly what I was warning you about- there are lots of various solvents that work as paint thinners, but not all will be useful for a piston soak.

Lacquer thinner isn't too bad because it typically contains a lot of acetone, but this particular one may not since it says "99% lower hazardous air pollutants."

Want to guess what the acetone is and why it's expensive?

Based on that I would guess (and it isn't much more than a guess) that this would not be nearly as effective.

More than likely due to an ad blocker you're running? I have the same problem, have to turn it off every time someone posts Amazon links.

I picked up a can of straight acetone at Canadian Tire up here, think that's all it said on the can. Kind of regret it though, kinda nasty stuff.

I haven’t studied organic chemistry in ages, but acetone is not that bad, it’s cool to the touch. (I’ve touched it, as well as the stuff I’m about to mention, that I’m more concerned about). There’s xylene. I’m more concerned about the strength of that. Whether it works, I just do not know...

I've found it starts to "burn", after a few seconds on your hands. Gotta wear gloves. Maybe the nail polish remover stuff is much more dilute.

100% pure acetone evaporates without a trace, so once it's evaporated, it's gone and no toxins are left. While it evaporates it is fairly deadly, though. Good stuff, as long as it's 100% pure acetone. Same with butane, BTW.
