So now we are challenging the professional military judgements of a U.S. Pacific Fleet Admiral and that ship's commander who are on-site and directly responsible for keeping that ship and crew in operational order. :cautious:

Pretty high and unfortunately similar to U.S. average.

We need max 5% positive rate. 15% means we are missing most infections. U.S. is currently >3x below needed testing capacity (if we use South Korea as a baseline).

The U.S. is now past 200k cases.

And Spain joins the 6-digit club too.

Tomorrow, Germany will be really close to surpassing China's claimed total cases.

And Friday, the UK may well be in position to surpass China's claimed death toll.

The captain certainly has his undies all bunched up. But we still have zero data on how physically sick any of the crew are. The aircraft carrier is not a rest home full of 80+ year old people with multiple chronic problems. The crew members all have functional thymus glands that are part of the immune system, while the rest home crowd do not.

There may be a few crew members who have particularly weak immune systems, but they're the exception, not the rule.

If they want to improve the immune systems of the crew, have them all go on deck with their shirts off and get a half hour's exposure to the sun each day. Darker skinned people will need 3-4 times as much sun exposure.

How sick crew members are, we will probably never know the truth. Even if they are not as sick as elderly people stricken by COVID-19, it is clear that situation is not normal. You wrote "I doubt that Covid-19 would have any effect on isolated ships." That statement is far from truth.

Remote offsite uninformed situation assessment doesn't hold a candle to the on-site first-hand version.

Somehow yesterday's final U.S. death toll didn't earlier sink in to me: 912, by Worldometer's tracking.

So far, no country has reached 1000 deaths reported in a single day, but this is getting scarily close. Italy reported 919 five days ago, Spain reported 913 two days ago.

So tell me what the first-hand report is of how non-functional the sailors are. Are they non-functional because someone sent them to their room?

Why the **** are you asking me when you know very well that I'm not on site there?

You should be asking those who have said information. And for operational security reasons, I won't be surprised if they inform you that your security clearance isn't high enough to receive the answer.

The report about an aircraft carrier feeds the paranoia about Covid-19. I suggest that such paranoia, and action, be directed at truly vulnerable populations. If you're 80+, already sick, and living in a rest home, it is entirely rational to fear Covid-19. If you're 20, healthy, and wandering around an aircraft carrier the danger is much less. Not zero, but more on the order of having an ordinary case of the flu. If you're sitting out Covid-19 submerged under the Arctic ice, you don't need to worry about the crew.

You are asserting, from a distance, that these military ships will not have enough illness issues to hurt their operational performance. And effectively asserting that your judgement of such is superior to the commanding officers actually on the scene.

Oh, the hubris. Especially after we had seen some hospitalization rate figures for younger people. Just because almost none of them are dying, doesn't mean that almost none of them are getting too ill to work.

While young adults are less likely to die, many do get sick enough to require hospitalization. That info was posted in one of these threads.
