Maybe this isn't new, but it's new to me. The Costco Connection magazine that came today shows Kirkland full-synthetic oil: 2 x 5-qt jugs for $29.99 including shipping and handling. Some weights in some warehouses at a lower price.

My understanding is that brand is identical to the Walmart "Super Tech" brand (and a few others) and is a decent quality lubricant manufactured by the same company, Warren Oil Company. Look at the barcode area and see if the part number starts with WPP, I think all Warren products have it, or it may say Warren Distribution. I would have no problem using it in one of my cars. Its around $14 a jug at Wally World and is available in pretty much all weights as Full Synthetic.

At this writing, Kirkland brand engine oil is in the API’s EOLCS database, and the grades used in Prius cars are shown as meeting the ILSAC GF-5 requirements, as specified by Toyota (see my March 2017 posting), so I wouldn’t hesitate to use it, if the price is right.

I'm all in on the Kirkland... Warren's same basic formula appears in the Amazon and SuperTech... FarmLabs (?) On YouTube tested it...

Cheaper than conventional, holds its own against the big boys.

The 5W-30 is the only stuff stocked in the store ($25/10 qts). All three weights are also available online for $30/10 qts (including shipping). A month or two ago it was on all sale for $25 including shipping.

I'd like to see bulk motor oil offered for sale, small qty for the DIY crowd. Maybe encouraged by legislation. And better recycling of used oil, pour out encouraged, bottles discouraged. And policing of the recycle facilities: our nearby Mr Lube takes used oil, but the ground for about 10 foot in front of the pour out point is an effing disaster zone.

I've taken used oil to AutoZone, but they don't take the jugs or the filters: "Just throw them in the trash."

It is called a jug of oil. I guess they could charge container deposits like the old soda bottles.

My hands leak. I need a container to carry oil.

New oil on the left, waste oil on the right. Been using both for years sir.

Considering the price difference between quart bottles and the big jugs, I'd say bulk buying is being encouraged.

PetCo once had bulk cat litter. The price difference wasn't worth it for most. Wegman's has bulk food, but I haven't checked the prices. Setting up a bulk oil dispenser, and keeping it clean, is an added expense for stores that aren't performing car service with such already in place, and likely most DIY people buy their oil from such stores. If your dealer was selling bulk oil at the level of a Walmart, they'd have to increase the price as more employee time is spent doing that.

Refillable oil bottles will get nastier than gas cans. Wiping off dribbles still leaves enough oil to pick up the dust and dirt floating around. There's a reason why it is used in some air filters. You just take better care than what most people will.

Advance Auto Parts takes them, at least IIRC, but this could be a regional thing.

Yeah a lot of good points. A good business model would maybe have a standardized container, you place it in position, key in a quantity, pay by card.

The zone around the waste oil tank at our Mr Lube is testament to that. :(

I can picture a bulk filling stand going to same way. The ones that were once around for 5 gallon water bottles always looked suspect to me.

Walmart was offering a box of oil (3 gallons, maybe).

The picture online did not have the current SN PLUS API rating like their 5 qt bottles had. The price per quart, if I recall correctly, was around 10¢ more than the Costco stuff. Don't hold me to that number.

Got a case of oil from Walmart years ago; they were out of individual bottles, and I don't think the jugs were common then.
Did the math after the oil change, and the box cost me 50 cents compared to getting singles.
