What’s size socket is the front axle hub nut on a generation 2? I am about to change the driver side cv axle. It has a leaking boot. Suggestions on the process to do this are also welcome.

30mm 12-point for original. 32mm 6-point for some aftermarket once.

If it's just a leaking boot you could just replace the boots and grease. That way you don't even need to remove the transaxle side of inner cv-joint from the transaxle.

For removing the entire axle be careful with transaxle output seal. Or just replace it.

Does it just pull out? Or is there trick removing it from the transmission?

The original nut is 30mm, which you should be able to use a 1-3/16 socket on as well, but in my experience, the Beck/Arnley replacement nuts are not. I believe they're like a 1-1/4 or 1-5/16. The CV axle will easily pull out of the transaxle, almost too easily when you don't want it to.

36mm is a very common hex size for replacement axle nuts.

While also requiring a slide hammer and axle puller when you do want it to. :)

Just pull out. Or leaver it out. Don't use too much force if it doesn't come out just rotate it and try again.

1-1/4" is 31.75mm and 1-5/16" is 33.34mm. So both of those are the aftermarket 32mm that I put on my post.

36mm for gen2 Prius? I don't think that would fit in the area in the center of the wheel bearing? Have you actually seen gen 2 Prius axles with 36mm hub nut?

Do not forget that the stake needs some technique or a tool like the Schley Products Toyota/Lexus Axle Nut Unlocking Tool (SLY-65420)

Sorry valde3, I didn't notice that in your post. I can definitely confirm that the Beck/Arnley is 32mm, since I just replaced my second one today.

In my experience, you can try to use a punch to unstake it, but the socket itself does a better job. It just takes a bit (a lot) more torque. Just jam the wheel studs with a breaker bar while loosening the axle nut.

I would always unstake it and never just rely on the thread to force the staking out. For one, I don't like hard work and it risks damaging the axle thread.

Question...I got creative and made my own slide hammer with some channel locks all-thread and a couple nuts and washers. It worked, but when I removed the cv axle transmission fluid went everywhere. Is that normal? Should I have drained the transmission first? What’s the process to refill it when I get the new cv axle and seal on?

Same as any time you change it, but if you're just topping it off, you won't need to bother with the drain plug (the one facing downward on the bottom of the tranny). Just find the fill plug on the side of the tranny (facing, forward in Gen 2, I think?), get a funnel and hose, and pour in the ATF-WS until about level with the bottom of the fill hole.

Typically the little metal gasket on the plug is replaced when you put the plug back in; the dealer might slide one across the counter at you when you're picking up some WS.
